Tedious anecdotes detracted
Reviewed: 12-14-24
I'm a long time reader and devotee of Mary Oliver. As a poet and a reader of poetry, she is my hero and my mentor. I was not interested to hear long detailed anecdotes of other people's lives and anguishes. Based on the description I was expecting insightful readings and commentary on Mary Oliver's work, and those segways into other people's stories detracted significantly from my experience with this lesson, and I was seriously considering returning this book. That being said, the last chapter did contain what I was looking for and was very nicely done. So I will not return, but if I listen to it again I will fast forward through the sections that I found distracting and unnecessary.

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage ( The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

Story
This Audible Exclusive production revisits Charles Dickens’ tragi-comic novel Little Dorrit. Written during the Crimean War, it a story of fortunes won and lost and a masterly portrayal of the failings of Victorian Society, with the ever-present spectre of law enforcement and imprisonment looming over a fearful population. Divided into two parts, Book One: Poverty and Book Two: Riches, Little Dorrit satirises the debtors prisons and the detrimental effect of enforcing a British class system.

Incredible novel, loved the satire that still applies today. The circumlocution office made me laugh out loud, and the study of human nature is timeless. Dialogue is perfect and natural; the characters and their names unforgettable. 10 stars.

Story
Don Quixote, the world's first novel and by far the best-known book in Spanish literature, was originally intended by Cervantes as a satire on traditional popular ballads, yet he also parodied the romances of chivalry. By happy coincidence he produced one of the most entertaining adventure stories of all time and, in Don Quixote and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, two of the greatest characters in fiction.

I did not want this book to end
Reviewed: 03-05-21
I was familiar with the basics of the story from seen the movie and listening to the musical soundtrack. But I had no idea of the depth and breadth of this amazing novel and to think it was written over 400 years ago blows my mind. I was also surprised by the number of strong female characters and the mostly respectful attitude towards women. Amazing for its time. The narrator was one of the best I've heard, probably the best male narrator I've heard. Wonderful interpretation of the different characters without being awkward or forced. Highly recommended and I will likely listen again.

Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.
