Story
In the war-torn London of 1939, fourteen-year-old Hazel and five-year-old Flora are evacuated to a rural village to escape the horrors of the Second World War. Living with the kind Bridie Aberdeen and her teenage son, Harry, in a charming stone cottage along the River Thames, Hazel fills their days with walks and games to distract her young sister, including one that she creates for her sister and her sister alone—a fairy tale about a magical land, a secret place they can escape to that is all their own.

Boring and Predictable
Reviewed: 01-12-24
Whisperwood was not developed at all. This story took way too long and was too dramatic. Also, the ending seemed obvious.

Didn't love it

this book probably could have been half as long, but Dumas was writing in the style of his time. even at double speed I felt like there were definitely parts we could have skipped.

Story
What do you do when the unthinkable happens? Elle Wright had an admittedly easy pregnancy - her scans went well, she and her baby were healthy throughout, and in May 2016, she and her husband welcomed their son, Teddy, into the world. Just a few hours after giving birth, they woke to find a nurse holding a cold and unresponsive Teddy, who had stopped breathing during the night. The happiest day of Elle's life had turned into every parent's worst nightmare, and she had to let her beautiful baby boy go.

I loved the portion where the family members shared how the loss of teddy affected them.

captures so much
Reviewed: 05-20-21
My second born, Élodie, lived four days. This book captures so many of the same things I've felt. It's not exactly the same experience of course, but some things about grief and love are universal. I think Teddy is proud of his mom for writing this book.
