I love Baldacci novels, but this one is disappointing. Baldacci is to be praised for attempting a difficult story, but it is contrived, in my opinion. It is still worth reading/listening to.

I suppose Baldacci was making a point that Decker is depressed and disillusioned. But really, was all the gratuitous swearing the only way to express that? I'm not prudish and and am certainly not a stranger to swearing myself, but in a book it needs to serve a purpose, IMHO.

I was confused by the three stories under one title. Maybe I am dense, but I didn’t see any relationships among the stories. Weird not to mention the other two stories on the “cover”

As far as Soarring Partners went, it ended kind of abruptly. The whole this”my was disappointing.

I usually don’t like women readers, especially of mystery genre books. Carol Monda is the perfect reader for the Sara Gran Clair DeWitt series

A Gambling Man is different from the other Archer books in my opinion, which is neither good not bad. I liked this Archer more than the preceding books, and I liked the performance more - loved the male reader. I thought the book read like a modern noire genre mystery without the noire detective. Maybe that's OK too - just a little confusing. I'd say the one thing that Iobjected to in this book were several gratuitous nods to the period that are demeaning to women, gays, blacks and probably some groups I missed. I don't think any of it was necessasry to paint the picture or advance the plot. The female reader has a voice that doesn't change from one character to the next maiking it hard sometimes to tell who is speaking and doesn't help the reader develop and image of the characters.

Early in the book there are some really lame lines that make me think Baldacci phoned this one in. It got better, but once a book is off on the wrong foot its hard to set right.

I have enjoyed Winslow’s other novels. This one is similar, but has some aspects I did not like.

Who needs one word chapters?
Ending a chapter short of a sentence and starting the next chapter by finishing the sentence is cute, but not with rapid-fire chapters.
Jumping forward and backward in time got tiresome to follow after a while.
