Homophobia and Weaponized Affection
Reviewed: 08-16-23
Homophobic. Major trigger warnings for this one in regards to sexual assault, rape, confinement, physical and emotional abuse, trauma, etc. Pros: The representation of the fear and discomfort Madeline experiences as a victim trying to deal with her trauma, felt pretty authentic. I appreciated Alec learning how to modifying his language and actions to better help Madeline heal. He was infinitely patient and kind. Cons: The idea that all Madeline's trauma could magically be fixed by her just realizing that penetrative sex didn't have to hurt, was a bit much for me. I also didn't like that when Alec and Madeline were in the midst of consummation, she panicked and Alec finally admitted he loved her. It felt like the admission was using it as a weapon to get what he wanted, regardless that his feelings toward her felt genuine to me as a reader. Then the big reveal at the end about her brother was just homophobic AF. It made for an uncomfortable feeling for me and I didn’t want to finish it.

Story
In the far reaches of space, you have to keep your guard up to survive. But this gorgeous alien warrior is breaking down my defenses. Three years ago, alien raiders abducted me from Earth. I escaped to a remote trading planet, where I’ve scraped by and kept my identity as a human hidden...until one day, I get caught stealing from a mysterious warrior named Rok. Aliens are dangerous and untrustworthy. Or at least, that’s what I’ve always thought. But Rok is different. Despite being furious that I took something from him, he doesn’t hurt me.

So far my least favorite of Hall's work, and I might give up on this series. I will try a different one though, I still enjoy her books! This one felt rushed, especially when we fast forward through the first 3 days of Rok and Tara getting to know each other.

Refreshing Take on Enemies Turned Lovers

Such a new and refreshing twist on a cliche over done tale. The lense of this conservative and repressive community and its views of independent women made this diverse and witty novel a pleasure to consume.

Story
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Story
Minnie Cooper knows two things with certainty: that her New Year's birthday is unlucky, and that it's all because of Quinn Hamilton, a man she's never met. Their mothers gave birth to them at the same hospital just after midnight on New Year's Day, but Quinn was given the cash prize for being the first baby born in London in 1990 - and the name Minnie was meant to have, as well. With luck like that, it's no wonder each of her birthdays has been more of a disaster than the one before.

There were plenty of opportunities for Droth to conceal things from Charlotte but he instead chooses the honorable and honest path every time. I thoughts I saw the cliche, predictable conflict coming several times but I was pleasantly surprised at every turn! Finally, a relationship based on respect and honesty!

Seventeen-year-old Aderyn ("Ryn") only cares about two things: her family and her family's graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don't always stay dead.

Morkai aka Jafar
Reviewed: 11-21-19
Morkai voice was annoying but performance was otherwise enjoyable. Morkai as a villain felt one dimensional and almost like Jafar in terms of wanting to marry a child princess. Pedophile anyone? I enjoyed Cora as a strong heroine and I hope Teryn grows to become her match.
