About this listen

Instant New York Times Best Seller

A Good Morning America Book Club Pick

Their lives began together, but their worlds couldn't be more different. After 30 years of missed connections, they're about to meet again....

Minnie Cooper knows two things with certainty: that her New Year's birthday is unlucky, and that it's all because of Quinn Hamilton, a man she's never met. Their mothers gave birth to them at the same hospital just after midnight on New Year's Day, but Quinn was given the cash prize for being the first baby born in London in 1990 - and the name Minnie was meant to have, as well. With luck like that, it's no wonder each of her birthdays has been more of a disaster than the one before.

When Minnie unexpectedly runs into Quinn at a New Year's party on their mutual 30th birthday, she sees only more evidence that fortune has continued to favor him. The gorgeous, charming business owner truly seems to have it all - while Minnie's on the brink of losing her pie-making company and her home. But if Quinn and Minnie are from different worlds, why do they keep bumping into each other? And why is it that each fraught encounter leaves them both wanting more?

A moving, joyful love story, This Time Next Year explores the way fate leads us to the people we least expect - no matter what the odds.

Critic reviews

"A funny, pull-at-your-heartstrings read, this is the perfect companion for curling up with hot chocolate and a blanket. Unashamedly romantic and packed full of holiday sparkle, it’s a hug in book form.”—Josie Silver, author of One Day in December

"[A] cute contemporary romantic comedy...The characters in this page-turning novel are richly drawn and transform substantially, especially Minnie, and all suggest that maybe happy ever after is up to us.”NPR Books

"If you make time for just one holiday read this year, make it Sophie Cousens's This Time Next Year."PopSugar

Needed the book to keep up with the flashbacks...

enjoyed the story but found it difficult to keep up with the flashbacks as I listened to the audio book. I kept feeling like I needed to go back to the paper version to figure out where things were and what happened when. otherwise it was good company for me while I cooked.

Cute story

This was a cute story, almost like reading a rom com. I wouldn’t mind of someone made it into a movie! I almost abandoned it, but the characters started to gather some more depth to gain my attention again. I didn’t love the performance. She did okay giving each character their own voice, but I felt like she was reading one sentence at a time and they were all patched together.

Refreshing, Clever & Funny

I loved everything about this novel. Sometimes I get irritated & frustrated about characters’ foibles, but it was impossible to not love Minnie Cooper! I don’t usually want to see screen adaptions of my favorite books but this one would be the perfect Rom-Com (oh the irony…) Emma Thompson-Bev, Rachael Brosnahan-Minnie, Hugh
Grant-Alan, Leila-Keke Palmer, Rupert Friend-Quinn Well, I can dream!! The characters were just so imperfectly perfect. I laughed out loud & wished I could’ve been one of Minnie’s friends!

Feel good story with some depth

It felt a little slow at first, but one I got into it, I kept being pulled back.

Great first read of the year!

I love to read books that are set at the time of year we are in especially holidays and I love British Rom-Com books and movies. I listened to this book earlier in 2023 and enjoyed it very much but listened to it again on New Year's to get in the mood for the holiday and for a little escape. I have to say I liked it even better the second time. I love the way Sophie Cousin's unravels the layers of her characters and you really care about each of the characters not just the main characters of Quinn and Minnie who were great but also the amazing supporting characters of Leila, Tara and Connie just to name a few. The character development of all the characters throughout the book is wonderful and I think the messages of family and friendship in this book are great reminders to all of us especially entering a New Year to prioritize what is most important to us!

Made my heart smile

It was the perfect pacing. I enjoyed the red strings throughout the entire story. I dislike when books state the lead characters falling madly in love in one week, but this book was realistic. I loved that they formed a friendship before falling in love. Yes, there was physical attraction but it wasn’t the basis of their love. Enjoyed that they were in their 30s, and showing traumas that can affect us into older age. Also, that we can change no matter how old we get. Definitely recommend.
