My best friend can write!!
Reviewed: 11-06-22
If you listen to Morbid then Alaina is one of your best friends. It just is. I suspected when she announced The Butcher and the Wren that she had writing chops but was so relieved when it was true. I look forward to seeing her writing continue and grow and to hopefully their being a part 2 to this story.

Story
Comedian Kate Willett was married to a woman and thought she'd never have to deal with men again. That is, until she found herself dumped, suddenly single, and mystifyingly...mostly attracted to dudes. Like any good comic, she was inspired to investigate, and thus ensued her hilarious, sometimes high-stakes personal research into the world of men, culminating in a beautiful, difficult romance.

Insightful, relatable and vulnerable. And still somehow funny. Kate Willett makes me proud to be a human and encouraged by her generation.

Story
Punching well above their weight, Max and Markham set out to bring down a sinister organisation founded in the future—with a suspicious focus on the past. Max's focus is staying alive long enough to reunite with Leon and Matthew, alternately helped and hindered by St Mary's—who aren't always the blessing they like to think they are. But non-stop leaping around the timeline—from witnessing Magna Carta to disturbing a certain young man with a penchant for gunpowder—is beginning to take its toll. Is Max going mad? Or are the ghosts of the past finally catching up with her?

I don’t write many reviews but I’m writing this one because I was a little meh about the interlude stories and it made me put off getting Cytonic. But I’m so glad I did. Right from the first minute it had me and I’ve spent 2 days binging. This series is fantastic. Number 3 is maybe better than the first 2. Maybe I’m just not an interlude person.

Story
When Milla accepts an off-season invitation to Le Rocher, a cozy ski resort in the French Alps, she's expecting an intimate weekend of catching up with four old friends. It might have been a decade since she saw them last, but she's never forgotten the bond they forged on this very mountain during a winter spent fiercely training for an elite snowboarding competition. Yet no sooner do Milla and the others arrive for the reunion than they realize something is horribly wrong.

This is the perfect listen for a cold housebound weekend. It pared perfectly with organizing my garage and cozying up by the fire with hot mug of chai after. I read a few scathing 1 star reviews citing “too much technical snow boarding lingo” and “too young adult”. Neither of those things is even remotely true. It’s a well crafted mystery and the narrator was perfect. Ignore the weird haters.

Story
For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

I’d spent a few days scrolling for my next listen and nothing was really hitting the spot. Then I came across The Wizard’s Butler. I can’t quite explain it, it was just the perfect listen I was craving. A slow build introducing a cast of characters worth investing my time with, a house full of mystery, history and magic, and limitless potential for where the story might take us next. I’m only disappointed that I didn’t discover this later when I could binge a few more.

I cannot overstate how awesome this book is. I'm not a gamer and I'd only consider myself nerd-adjacent but I did grow up in the 80's and I enjoyed every bit of this. Having Wil Wheaton narrate is the icing on the cake. I'm pretty sure I'll be doing a third listen at some point.
