Story
Ever since a man was found dead in Vera's teahouse, life has been good. For Vera that is. She’s surrounded by loved ones, her shop is bustling, and best of all, her son, Tilly, has a girlfriend! All thanks to Vera, because Tilly's girlfriend is none other than Officer Selena Gray. The very same Officer Gray that she had harassed while investigating the teahouse murder. Still, Vera wishes more dead bodies would pop up in her shop, but one mustn't be ungrateful, even if one is slightly...bored.

I loved this book and I hope there will be more Clever Vera Wong Murder mysteries in the future.
The characters are so lively, the story arch is surprisingly and the ending makes it hard to start any other book. I want to be adopted by Vera and her nosy friendenemy Winifred

I wish there was more…

What I liked: engaging story, folklore, mystery, deep dark psychology. Many voices and personalities made this into a true audio theater experience.
What I disliked: this story is supposed to take place in Germany, all the accents are VERY not German, maybe Irish/an accent range from the UK? That was a disconnect.
I wish there was more to the ending, but I also understand the suspense of a cliffhanger.

Story
Writer Karla Cornejo Villavicencio was on DACA when she decided to write about being undocumented for the first time using her own name. It was right after the election of 2016, the day she realized the story she'd tried to steer clear of was the only one she wanted to tell. So she wrote her immigration lawyer's phone number on her hand in Sharpie and embarked on a trip across the country to tell the stories of her fellow undocumented immigrants—and to find the hidden key to her own.

Giving 5/5 while seething at The End
Reviewed: 01-10-25
This book is a Cognitive Dissonance Cocktail- the writing style is the effervescent Vapor that carries the bitter, sweet, salty and comic stories. Shared in a company of other humans who just yearn to talk, and be heard. And they do. And I listen. Through all my own protestations and agreements.
But harck! there is one note that reminds me that this book is medicine not a treat- the cloying voice of the suffering narrator/author. Finally at the end of the book, I may get a glimpse as to why.

Overall this is a very enjoyable listen. The story is a bit of a web, so do your best to keep the characters mapped in your mind. The performance: I like all the different voices; their energy and emotions bring the story to life- it’s like sitting around in a cozy living room with a group of good friends who interrupt each other to tell about a wild adventure they were all in.

I think this book is written for all the survivors of C-PTSD and the ones who love them through the ugly storms. Dr J Storey was definitely not my favorite person and I cringed so hard and so often. But I think the author did an amazing job portraying her internal storms and her dissociation from her reality.

The twists and turns were unexpected
Reviewed: 06-15-24
I like that I keep being hooked in further into the story from the unexpected twists even though I also keep hating how I can’t tell the difference between the individual characters sometimes, the banal Russian-villain archetype, and ghost-romance is really not for me. But then Danielle is a strong character, who is undervalued and untrusted but still manages to do what she perceives as the right thing. And her friendship with Lilly is the kind of feel good friendship that one craves in a book. So I don’t know- I can’t help but keep wanting to hear more..

Story
Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

Story
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Yes, I also am in the camp of folks saying this story is far fetched.
(Warning: Some spoilers ahead)
Mostly I feel this story is far fetched because of the way it is written.
In the first half-to two thirds of the book, the author was laying the clues to covertly point to a certain person/persons constantly showing up as the ‘good guy’ in Isla’s and Elodie’s story. Because, sadly, who amongst us doesn’t know that there isn’t such a thing as a ‘good guy?’ That would have been a realistic and tragic ending. And then miraculously, poof, last third of the book a completely different arc shows up. Completely covering up the suspicion of the first part… so tell me Anni Taylor, as the author, what gives? What happened there for you as the creative constructing this story? What, these person(s) really are just misunderstood odd-balls after all your particular clues? And our victims narrated trepidations and interpretations..? I feel that there are chunks of justice missing because of the plot twists. Finally the ending feels more fantastical and waaay to convenient.
But yes, this was a free audible book that I listened to the end. I thought the narrator voiced the different characters quite expertly.
