I thought she was British. Maybe just too many Australian and British tv and movie roles. She also is in her late 60’s when this was released, and her voice may reflect that.
Aside from that, I love stories by Alafair Burke. I am trying to separate the narrator from the plot, but it is hard.

Ignoring all the sex, rape, and violence….
Reviewed: 06-13-23
I got the audiobook for free on the audible plus section of books. My husband had watched all of the available shows, and I had occasionally been in the same room. I was not surprised by the sex and rape and violence. I like Scotland and having visiting led once, some names of places were familiar.
What annoyed me totally was a beep! Periodically there is a soft beep sound! I don’t know if it happened in the recording or the editing. I am glad to not be listening on headphones, because that would surely be even more annoying. I am only half way through the 32 hours, and don’t know if this will happen all the way through the book.

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Elizabeth Zott. I love her.
Reviewed: 10-23-22
I totally enjoyed this book. I loved the characters and their flaws, and the story they lived. I would not change anything. I don’t understand the people who have written negative reviews. My mother was a college professor, but in the 50’s she worked in a pineapple canning factory. Stories from that period of her life could have been a blue collar Zott. I went to an engineering school. As one of the few women there, I was very fortunate to not experience the misogyny Zott did. Another college that I considered would have been a different experience. I will be thinking about this book for a long time.

Three years after her mother’s death, Ruth is finally sorting through her things when she finds a curious relic: a decades-old photograph of her own Norfolk cottage—before she lived there—with a peculiar inscription on the back. Ruth returns to the cottage to uncover its meaning as Norfolk’s first cases of Covid-19 make headlines, leaving her and Kate to shelter in place there. They struggle to stave off isolation by clapping for frontline workers each evening and befriending a kind neighbor, Zoe, from a distance.

What a wonderful book!

This may be my favorite of Elly Griffiths’ books. The plot was intriguing. Set during the onset of Covid in England, there may be some readers who don’t want to be reminded of those early days in 2020, when we thought the virus would be over soon. I, however, really appreciate how Elly wove the virus into the story. Today I wore a mask to the grocery store for the first time in a few months- the latest variant has the CDC and my county health department recommending them again. The “bad guy” was a surprise, the several false leads and the new character were good. I look forward to the next book, when Michelle continues her “Harry, we have to talk” conversation! This was a free, “included with membership” book. I downloaded it based on the description. Vacuum cleaner dust! I really enjoyed it. The writing was excellent. The mystery kept me surprised. The “hero” was one I will want to read about again. The narrator was excellent too. He did some different voices, and kept them straight, but I just really liked was his voice. I will look for more books read by him. Thanks, Audible for the free introduction!

The sappy dialogue and details were what soured me on the book. The first few chapters were fine, but as it went on, I grew more annoyed with both the story and the narrator. I am sticking with it to see how it resolves, but it is very hard to listen! I am going to go clean the kitchen to have something to distract me while I get to the end.

When Elizabeth Keane returns to Ireland after her mother’s death, she’s focused only on saying goodbye to that dark and dismal part of her life. Her childhood home is packed solid with useless junk, her mother’s presence already fading. But within this mess, she discovers a small stash of letters — and ultimately, the truth. Forty years earlier, a young woman stumbles from a remote stone house, the night quiet except for the constant wind that encircles her as she hurries deeper into the darkness away from the cliffs and the sea.

I was hesitant when I saw Graham Norton wrote a mystery, but I loved it.
Reviewed: 05-02-20
The story was great, the setting in Ireland was one I loved, especially when places I have been were mentioned. I was sorry when the book was over. I listened to all of it today.
The main characters were well written, with no extra fluff added. Norton was a wonderful reader. I had expected something a bit funny, given his reputation on television, but although I smiled a few times, it was not what one would think he would write- very sweet, with a mystery to be solved. His use of NOW and THEN as heading he made everything clear about the time period.

I did not like the gorey story. I did not like the main character at all. He was mean and rude and violent. The bad guy did horrible things to his victim. The narrator did not make it any better. There was something about him that made him seem he embraced all of the violence and rudeness and meanness. I do not recommend this to anyone unless you are a serial killer doing research into techniques you never thought of. To top it off, it is unnecessarily long. An editor seemed missing or also grossed out and not paying attention. I only kept listening because I needed an audiobook and it was my last one in my file.
