About this listen

Set in Minnesota, Gone to Dust is the debut private-eye murder mystery from Emmy Award-winning Seinfeld writer Matt Goldman.

A brutal crime. The ultimate cover-up. How do you solve a murder with no useable evidence?

Private detective Nils Shapiro is focused on forgetting his ex-wife and keeping warm during another Minneapolis winter when a former colleague, neighboring Edina Police Detective Anders Ellegaard, calls with the impossible.

Suburban divorcée Maggie Somerville was found murdered in her bedroom, her body covered with the dust from hundreds of emptied vacuum cleaner bags, all potential DNA evidence obscured by the calculating killer.

Digging into Maggie's cell-phone records, Nils finds that the most frequently called number belongs to a mysterious young woman whose true identity could shatter the Somerville family - but could she be guilty of murder?

After the FBI demands that Nils drop the case, Nils and Ellegaard are forced to take their investigation underground, where the case grows as murky as the contents of the vacuum cleaner bags. Is this a strange case of domestic violence or something with far-reaching, sinister implications?

Excellent narration by MacLeod Andrews completes this murder mystery with author Matt Goldman's suspenseful writing. I enjoyed the complex storyline, along with all the unusual characters. Andrews brings all his characters to life with his humorous and talented narration. We can only hope that author and narrator join forces again and again for an in-depth brilliant detective series. If you like suspense, humor and superb narration, this book is for you! Highly recommended with a 🍒 on top.

Loved the narrator! One of the best in my library!

The concept of the story was so interesting that I had to give it a listen. The narrator brings out all the wonderful sarcasm that's in this story and I'm happy to say that I kept guessing most of the story.

Give it a shot

I like mysteries especially murder mysteries. This was good, not great. A little predictable but I'll try the next in the series.

GOOD BUT PREDICTABLE

Where does Gone to Dust rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Sometimes you take a risk on a book thinking a good little mystery would be nice; Gone to Dust was the audiobook I looked forward to starting up again after having to pause. Normally I would enjoy one book at home and a different one at work but this was the type I had to know how it ended sooner - I couldn't drag it out. It was easy to get lost in because it felt real, not far-fetched. The characters were authentic. Narrator played the parts well. It ranks up there with others I highly recommend to friends.

Better than expected...

I really wanted to give this a higher rating. I enjoyed it up until everything was explained at which point i had a bunch of questions and couldn’t fathom the motivation of some main characters. That said, the writing was good, and I laughed out loud at some ofthe snappy dialogue. Kept me interested and thoughtful throughout. Probably just my high expectations, and need to knit pick. but I will be reading the next in the series. Gosh I’m even more conflicted now than when I started this review.

Loved it till the end

A believable story, characters as comfortable as old friends, and narration so good that you are only aware of it when compared to other, lesser, efforts. Only two points Mar my enjoyment of this series: 1. There aren't more books in it; and, 2. The switch of narrators on book 4.

Clear your calendar; this series will suck you in.
