Story
The First World War laid waste to a continent and brought about the end of innocence — and the end of faith. Unlike a generation of young writers who lost faith in the God of the Bible, however, J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis found that the Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers on the Western Front, survived the trenches, and used the experience of that conflict to ignite their Christian imagination.

Hope and Heroism Defeats Despair and Escapism
Reviewed: 11-28-23
The conditions endured by Tolkien, Lewis, and the other soldiers of WWI and the wars that followed is beyond my understanding. But grief visits us all, and some hardships must simply be endured. This book reminds me that great works of literature can be friends and a source of strength.
Middle Earth and Narnia are not places to escape to, they are training grounds for heroic resistance to despair.
This book can help if you feel like you want to give up. It helped me.

A Masterpiece
Reviewed: 09-27-23
The Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy is a stunning creation that explores history, sociology, and psychology in addition to the obvious emphasis on physics and experimental technology.
It is a challenging, provocative world to live in for a little while.

Story
The lives of many famous artists have been shrouded in mystery and conjecture, but none have been more controversial than the life of Vincent van Gogh. Remembered for his swirling brushstrokes and burning colors, Vincent van Gogh is today one of the best-known painters. Though his career as a painter spanned less than ten years, he produced a body of work that remains one of the most enduring in all of modern art. In his lifetime, however, he received little recognition. Today his paintings sell for countless millions, yet during his lifetime, van Gogh managed to sell just one painting.

Listened to this after seeing At Eternity’s Gate. I learned about his life, as I expected. I was surprised to be moved to tears by the compassionate portrayal of his illness.
