Story
Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective in literary history. For the first time since the death of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a new Holmes story has been sanctioned by his estate, whetting the appetites of fans everywhere. Information about the book will be revealed as deliberately as Holmes himself would unravel a knotty case, but bestselling novelist and Holmes expert Anthony Horowitz is sure to bring a compelling, atmospheric story to life.

Dark and Revolting
Reviewed: 05-29-25
I’m not a literary critic, so to me the story seemed reasonable as far as style. I thought the narrator was very good. No crime is cheerful, but some are nauseating, and the crimes in this story are such. I know that people can be depraved, and I don’t mean to be an ostrich, but it bothers me that people make
their living coming up with describing such disgusting things and I don’t find it entertaining. At least there is some justice written in, and I’m thankful for that. I do wish that we could be warned somehow before spending money because I’d just as soon not read darkness and would avoid those types of plotlines.

Story
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Reviews are great on this. So….I’m clearly uneducated as to the genre. Lots of action, that’s for sure. Cusswords every other sentence, hurts my ears and wrecks the story. I wish someone had mentioned that and I wouldn’t have purchased. As I said, clearly I don’t know what to expect of the genre; or I didn’t before. I guess I do now. The narrator does seem great, and there is lots of comedy. I just don’t really want to feel like I’m listening to trash mouth. But if you like frequent swearing, I’m sure it’s a fun story. I didn’t get very far. Too bad.

Light vs. Dark
Reviewed: 05-01-25
This story had many positive elements; interesting characters, nice romance, plot tension, mysteries to solve, to name some. Narrator is excellent, as she always is. At first I liked it, but as the series progressed, it became darker and the constant slamming of men (I’m a woman who respects women) gets tiresome. Angry women overpowering/outsmarting/taking vengeance on men isn’t really any healthier than the acts against women or anyone. I’m not going to continue the series, but the heroine feels more and more like a wicked witch trying to camouflage as a champion using hexes and curses and anger and death to achieve goals. She might lighten up…….Darkness is NOT light. No thanks.

In this stunning conclusion to the After The Rift series, Josie and her friends return home to find Glancia on the brink of war and their enemies in power. With political machinations and court intrigue bringing danger at every turn, they must tread carefully. But being careful won’t bring resolutions and answers. It won’t bring back lost memories or stop the nation hurtling into war.

I liked this story. Just the right balance of intrigue and romance. I respect the author for not drawing it out forever and ever to sell more books. I always get tired of that and never finish the series. The narrator is outstanding, as usual, truly one of the best in my opinion. I struggle with heroines who are constantly getting themselves in snaggled situations, but it all worked out. Recommend.

Story
The king's magnificent palace was built in a matter of weeks. No one saw the builders, no villagers are allowed beyond the gilded gate, and only one servant has ever left. The haunted look in her eyes as she was recaptured by the palace guards is something Josie, daughter of the village doctor, has never forgotten. For Josie, the palace is a mystery that grows more intriguing after she meets the captain of the guards, a man known only as Hammer, as mysterious and captivating as the palace itself. Whispers of magic fuel Josie's desire to uncover the truth, but an ordinary girl like her can only dream of ever being invited inside.

Good story
Great narration
Decent mystery
Good characters
Dislikes:
The occasional F-bomb is totally unnecessary. Why bother? It just decreases the integrity of the literature.
I’ll read Book 2 and see what happens. The story is compelling, but I care about clean words, too. I really like this author overall and the narrator is amazing.

It was ok, especially on Plus. Not very believable heroine. I don’t like being set up for the duel between two incredibly amazing men both immediately falling for this woman whom no one has noticed for years. Now we have to be strung along wondering who’s going to win the main character. Honestly, she doesn’t seem THAT great. And silly stuff. Hyperbolically unlikable men, a killer who suddenly spills guts at the end with very little motivation to do so, after being super devious to cover crimes all throughout the story, and the like. If you don’t mind not feeling super engaged or convinced, it’s an entertaining story. Narrator is good, which makes all the difference.

Annoying main character
Reviewed: 12-08-24
Rarely would I leave a negative review, but I just have never disliked a character as much as Holly. Whiny and arrogant, she continues to bumble through mysteries, always getting into trouble and making her sheriff boyfriend have to drop everything and rescue her. She refuses to respect him as an officer, and knows more than everyone else. When he gets frustrated at her idiocy, she gets angry at him and he wimpishly apologizes. She doesn’t SOLVE mysteries, she annoys the killers into revealing themselves and wanting to kill her and then everyone gives her the credit. Always has to be rescued, again. The first two volumes were free and I regret paying for the third one. Sorry, but no respect from me for this character who selfishly repeats the same mistakes in every story and learns nothing from it.
