Story
On a bright spring afternoon, Ciara Fay makes a split-second decision that will change everything. Grabbing an armful of clothes off the clothesline, she straps her two young daughters into her car and drives away. Head spinning, all she knows for certain is that home is no longer safe—and that this time, when she leaves, she must stay away. On the surface, she has a perfect life: her husband, Ryan, is a good provider, sometimes even kind and attentive, from a nice Irish family, and they have another baby on the way.

This book was hard to listen to, I was always on edge, but I plowed through, as did the protagonist. A really important read. And the love for her children - beautiful!

Story
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Extraordinary book
Reviewed: 01-01-25
I wasn't sure what to expect. Mark Twain is such a classic. I was wondering what a rewrite would be like. But I was totally overwhelmed by Mr. Everett's rendering of the character of James. Jim/James became a full man, a bright, creative, loving, powerful man and my understanding and empathy for the life of a slave and their family was completely transformed. I highly recommend this book - much better to listen to it than read it, I think, given the importance of language and expression as part and parcel of the story. Mr. Hoffman's narration was exquisite. I am still pondering this book many days/weeks after finishing it.

A story of love, deep caring and fortitude
Reviewed: 05-15-24
The author wrote this book from his experience as a 9 year old. That made it so tender and reminds us what the harsh world looks, feels and smells like to a youngster. The willingness and sacrifices of Chino and Patricia were enormous, taking care of Javier as if he was their own. Such selflessness.
There are many children who make the trip on their own. Imagine how hard it is for them and for their parents.

Moving and supremely well-done novel and narration
Reviewed: 02-19-24
I think this book is much better listened to than read. The narrator's back and forth between english and mandarin really make the book come alive. The main character, an American woman named Alice, is a translator in China. This book brings out her personality, her thoughts, feelings, worries. I enjoyed it very much and learned quite a bit about Chinese culture and traditions.

Acclaimed author Jonathan Rosen’s haunting investigation of the forces that led his closest childhood friend, Michael Laudor, from the heights of brilliant promise to the forensic psychiatric hospital where he has lived since killing the woman he loved. A story about friendship, love, and the price of self-delusion, The Best Minds explores the ways in which we understand—and fail to understand—mental illness.

Really touched my heart
Reviewed: 05-06-23
I found this book to be heartbreaking, powerful and so incredibly sad. I appreciate others' reviews stating that the book meanders or is too long, but I found the combination of personal story, social history, discussion about mental illness and ethics all to be very meaningful. I listenied to the whole book, including the end pieces of resources used and acknowledgements. Rosen gave the time and detail to a complex story. My condolences to the Costello family.

The narrator was excellent and much of the story was compelling. The descriptions of the war was repetitive and I don’t think truly added to the story. The ending was abrupt.
