Story
The Empire of the Wolf is on its knees, but there's life in the great beast yet. To save it, Sir Konrad Vonvalt and Helena must look beyond its borders for allies—to the wolfmen of the southern plains, and the pagan clans in the north. But old grievances run deep, and both factions would benefit from the fall of Sova. Even these allies might not be enough. Their enemy, the zealot Bartholomew Claver, wields infernal powers bestowed on him by a mysterious demonic patron. If Vonvalt and Helena are to stand against him, they will need friends on both sides of the mortal plane.

I really enjoyed this trilogy, start to finish. An intelligent, chilling, mature…chilling and curiously relevant tale superbly told by way of Lucy Paterson’s inimitable narration. Well worth the parchment it was scratched upon.

Good, smart hard sci-fi. The characters have depth and their motivations and relationships are refreshingly real and convincingly complex; not all good, not all bad. Admirably handles themes that are relevant in the current national and global zeitgeist…but good, hard sci-fi first and foremost.

Story
In this sweeping history of the ancient Near East, Amanda Podany takes listeners on a gripping journey from the creation of the world's first cities to the conquests of Alexander the Great. The book is built around the life stories of many ancient men and women, from kings, priestesses, and merchants to brickmakers, musicians, and weavers. Their habits of daily life, beliefs, triumphs, and crises, and the changes that people faced over time are explored through their own written words and the buildings, cities, and empires in which they lived.

Layperson here but with a deep curiosity about the lives of ancient and prehistoric peoples since my childhood, As such, this book is proverbial manna to me, thoroughly engrossing and thoroughly enjoyable. Also, the author’s narration is crisp, clear and pleasant on the ear. All in all, I judge this work a fine weave, indeed.

The ranks of the Kettral have been decimated from within, and the kenta gates, granting instantaneous travel across the vast lands of the empire, can no longer be used. In order to save the empire, one of the surviving Kettral must voyage beyond the edge of the known world through a land that warps and poisons all living things to find the nesting ground of the giant war hawks. “FK%C Gwenna Sharpe!!”
Reviewed: 07-12-21
The Gwenna Sharpe thread IS the book, here, and Moira Quirk’s absolutely stellar narration IS that which makes it happen.
I generally prefer male narrators in this genre of story yet Moira Quirk and Elizabeth Knowelden (‘Skullsworn’) have, in my estimation, emerged, head and shoulders, to be, the most electrifying performers of Mr. Staveley’s works to date. By far.

High-grade, literarily mature SciFi/Fantasy for readers who enjoy a more sophisticated and multifarious literary experience.
An enthralling story filled with compelling characters and coupled with the right narrator (the choice of which can make or break an audiobook, regardless of the merits of the text) whose performance is first-rate. An enthusiastic FIVE STARS.
