A Classic Dick Francis Story

I started reading Dick Francis in the 1970’s. Missed this one apparently. Now catching it as an audiobook. Moral but imperfect hero. Complex characters and personalities. And of course the mixed happy ending. A gem.

Story has a lot of heart, good action, and positive messaging. I like and engage with the characters and an visualize the world, all good things in a series. Couple minor plot holes but easy to overlook. I would recommend this series.

Story
Fifteenth Century Europe. Tom Swan is not a professional soldier. He's really a merchant and a scholar looking for remnants of Ancient Greece and Rome - temples, graves, pottery, fabulous animals, unicorn horns. But he also has a real talent for ending up in the midst of violence when he didn't mean to. Having used his wits to escape execution, he begins a series of adventures that take him to street duels in Italy, meetings with remarkable men - from Leonardo Da Vinci to Vlad Dracula - and from the intrigues of the War of the Roses to the fall of Constantinople.

Great Story!

As good as his killer of men series. Similar to Simon Scarrow and his Roman series the author is someone who is both a good historian and good author. I enjoyed being transported to the medieval world with interesting characters and great plot. The grand scope of history underlying the plot appears accurate and puts multiple world events together in a timeline I had never comprehended before. Off to the next book of the series….

The first novel in Simon Scarrow's bestselling Roman series. It is 42 AD, and Quintus Licinius Cato has just arrived in Germany as a new recruit to the Second Legion, the toughest in the Roman army. If adjusting to the rigours of military life isn't difficult enough for the bookish young man, he also has to contend with the disgust of his colleagues when, because of his imperial connections, he is appointed a rank above them.

Read this as a book several years ago, now as an audiobook. Still awesome. One of the best historical fiction series I’ve run across. Historical accuracy as far as I can tell seems good and story line engaging.

Story
The victory was hollow for Alan. He had been running a close second behind his good friend Bill Davidson, when Bill’s horse unexpectedly jerked as he soared over the steeplechase fence. Now, Bill was dead from his injuries, and Alan knew it wasn’t an accident. A small menacing thread of wire dangled from the top of the fence—a carefully constructed plot of malice. Curious, Alan begins an investigation that points to corruption that transcends the racing circuit—seeping into the town surrounding the track.

Story
There's a damsel in distress and accusations of attempted murder flying around, but it's not in the comfortable confines of the English countryside; it's in the very distant city of Damascus. Lennox must go and investigate, although he's not too keen on exotic locations, and his old retainer Greggs is distinctly averse to the very idea. Nevertheless, ex-Chief Inspector Swift persuades them, and they reach the ancient city to discover a movie crew, a spy, and a couple of mysterious ladies.

Clever, good characters, amusing, all very good things in a book. Not as thematic as Agatha Christie but very well done. I have read all 3 that have come out and look forward to next installment.

Good writing, good story, good narration. Mildly dated but not in a bad way. Classic science fiction. Pournelle always had the ability to tie in well developed characters within a great sci-if story. This one does not disappoint!

Good Story-production just ok

Liked the story. Cast was good. Liked the plot twists and not totally predictable. Production sound a bit distracting. I don’t listen in a sound room but exercising or car, between background and music/effects missed voices completely sometime. Overall though a good effort.
