About this listen

A 1920s murder mystery - death in the desert with intrigue, adventure, and a dog of distinction.

There's a damsel in distress and accusations of attempted murder flying around, but it's not in the comfortable confines of the English countryside; it's in the very distant city of Damascus.

Lennox must go and investigate, although he's not too keen on exotic locations, and his old retainer Greggs is distinctly averse to the very idea. Nevertheless, ex-Chief Inspector Swift persuades them, and they reach the ancient city to discover a movie crew, a spy, and a couple of mysterious ladies.

Nobody seems to be telling the truth. They all have secrets, and there's one secret in particular that's drawn them like bees to the honeypot. But what is it? And then, there's murder, and mysteries from the ancient past and a handsome sheik who remains in the shadows.

Heathcliff Lennox and Swift must investigate and use all their ingenuity to unravel the enigma that lies hidden deep below the dusty streets of ancient Damascus.

Major Heathcliff Lennox is an ex-WW 1 war pilot, six feet and three inches, unruly dark blond hair, age around 30 - named after the hero of Wuthering Heights by his romantically minded mother - much to his great annoyance. Death in Damascus is the fourth book in the Lennox series.

Just fun!

I once again enjoyed every second of this book. Mr. Fog remains a favorite but I missed Tubbs. The friendship between Lennox and Swift is nice and I very much appreciate the Butler who sounds like Mr. Carson of Downton Abbey! The historical aspect is a huge draw.

Delightful

Great mystery! I love the characters, especially Tubbs, the kitty and Mr. Fogg, faithful hound. And the butler “Sir, can we go home NOW?” The author adds such wonderful flourishes like Jimmy, the Cooks nephew. The books are like great paintings. The more you listen the greater appreciation you have for the richness Ms Karen creates in the settings. She also weaves in these stories themes of redemption.

These are all very fine works of fiction. Lennox and ex inspector Swift go to Damascus to help mutual friend Percy. Ms Percy and Lennox have not owned their feeling for each other. Percy’s concern is her ex finance, accused of attempted murder. And she has not resolved her feeling for him. Add a continuous string of murders with a thread of an archaeological puzzle and you have a great mystery.

Adventure

I am thrilled with this book in the series. It took us to a new place, one I certainly have never been to, but one I’m very curious about. I found it entertaining, thrilling and very exciting. Onto the next book🤓👍🏻

Great... but bad grammar is grating!

The author does not know the difference between “I” and “me.” She seems to think that “I” is a fancy form of “me.” The narrator is an educated British man in the 1920s, and he would certainly know how to speak properly. It’s very jarring to CONSISTENTLY hear “I” used incorrectly. Is the book’s editor also unaware that “I” is a subject, and “me” is an object?!

Best of the Four

Menuhin has really found her stride in this fourth book, bringing us a compelling hero detective with a delightful supporting cast and an adventurous romp into mystery and good old fashion tongue in cheek humor. I look forward to the next installment.

Another fabulous book by Menuhin

The writing is personal drawing in the reader/listener as if present. The narrator is so very good.

Karen Menuhin has made my winter more fun!

I am so delighted to have discovered this series. There is nothing better than a well written, clever mystery. These are filled with humor and the performance by Sam Dewhurst-Phillips is top notch. Heathcliff Lennox has been my constant companion for a few weeks now. I am on book 5 of the series and I am loving every minute of them.
