Story
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was.

unlikable characters
Reviewed: 12-04-24
The characters are unlikable and the story leaves nothing to attach to since all of the details seem irrelevant in the beginning. The whole tech/stock thing is not believable either. I guess you're supposed to feel bad for the main character and daughter but again, they're unlikable, stereotypical 'bratty teenager' is such an annoying trope and I don't feel interested in getting to know why her dad disappeared if I don't care about her.

Story
On a beach in a run-down seaside town on the Yorkshire coastline, sixteen-year-old Joan Wilson is set on fire by three other schoolgirls. Nearly a decade after the horrifying murder, journalist Alec Z. Carelli has written the definitive account of the crime, drawn from hours of interviews with witnesses and family members, painstaking historical research, and most notably, correspondence with the killers themselves. The result is a riveting snapshot of lives rocked by tragedy, and a town left in turmoil.

bogged down narrative
Reviewed: 10-12-24
The premise of this book seemed intriguing however it quickly became apparent to me that most of the book is rambling on about irrelevant details. I understand it's important to build atmosphere and characters but the filler in this book was way more than I could bear to listen to. I shelved at 2 hours.

Story
Irina obsessively takes explicit photographs of the average-looking men she persuades to model for her, scouted from the streets of Newcastle. Placed on sabbatical from her dead-end bar job, she is offered an exhibition at a fashionable London gallery, promising to revive her career in the art world and offering an escape from her rut of drugs, alcohol and extreme cinema. The news triggers a self-destructive tailspin, centred around Irina's relationship with her obsessive best friend and a shy young man from her local supermarket who has attracted her attention....

spiraling character, manipulator, self destructive
Reviewed: 07-16-24
The main character is unlikable, unreliable, and spiraling. She manipulates and abuses everyone around her, yet she captivates / traps people in her web, just like you'll be captivated when listening to this story. At times the narrator annoyed me with the high pitched voices but overall it was an entertaining listen. At times it felt repetative with the whole drug/alcohol binges and what not. At the end, I felt that we really don't know what's true in the entire narrative, because it seems like she fell off the deep end before the story even starts. I don't know if that makes sense, but overall I liked it!

Story
Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remy’s father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost.
