Publisher's summary

Irina obsessively takes explicit photographs of the average-looking men she persuades to model for her, scouted from the streets of Newcastle. Placed on sabbatical from her dead-end bar job, she is offered an exhibition at a fashionable London gallery, promising to revive her career in the art world and offering an escape from her rut of drugs, alcohol and extreme cinema.

The news triggers a self-destructive tailspin, centred around Irina's relationship with her obsessive best friend and a shy young man from her local supermarket who has attracted her attention....

Boy Parts is the incendiary debut novel from Eliza Clark, a pitch-black comedy both shocking and hilarious, fearlessly exploring the taboo regions of sexuality and gender roles in the 21st century.

It feels like a feminist take on American Psycho

Vocal performance is excellent, and the book is well written. It takes from American Psycho, but I enjoy the feminist outlook and graphic scenes. You will hate the character, but you will also be mesmerized by her anger and callousness. The descent into madness with no consequences is entertaining. It's worth the listen.

spiraling character, manipulator, self destructive

The main character is unlikable, unreliable, and spiraling. She manipulates and abuses everyone around her, yet she captivates / traps people in her web, just like you'll be captivated when listening to this story. At times the narrator annoyed me with the high pitched voices but overall it was an entertaining listen. At times it felt repetative with the whole drug/alcohol binges and what not. At the end, I felt that we really don't know what's true in the entire narrative, because it seems like she fell off the deep end before the story even starts. I don't know if that makes sense, but overall I liked it!

Fun- weird

Fun listen but I was hoping for a bigger ending. Not a waste of a credit but I guess I feel a little bit like I just want to know what happens… the ending isn’t really that…

Hauntingly Visceral

I didn’t know what to expect from Boy Parts. It was beautifully dark and twisted to the point beyond reality. Like Christian Bates, you’re left wondering if she ever did the terrible thing that follows her. Impeccably voiced and performed by the author.

Eliza Clark is a Major Talent

This is the first time I've listened to a book read by the author that I wasn't wondering why they didn't pay a professional. If Eliza Clark wasn't already slated to be a major author she could have a great career as a reader. Boy Parts far exceeded my expectations. I thought it would be a fun, throw away book but was amazed at what turned out to be a well written character study. I don't want to give any spoilers but there comes a point one wonders what is real in the book and what is going on the the main character's mind. Intelligent writing assures this doesn't come across like a hoaky dream sequence. It really works to make for a compelling read. Looking forward to Ms Clark's next book. Sure hope she reads it for Audible.

trigger warning: v!olence and ab*se

I couldn't stop listening! Fascinating and intoxicating. But not for everyone. I haven't seen any reviews mentioning the horrible ab*se these men are experiencing from our narcissistic main character. Be warned! There's no pleasantries here. Overall, very good writing and capturing listen. Poor Eddie. The ending was abrupt and I'm bummed to not know what happens.

Disturbing

I don't know how this is considered a dark comedy, I didn't laugh one time was genuinely disturbed. Great read

American Psycho but British

American Psycho but British and with more photography, noncon kink, dysfunctional family and friend dynamics, and exploration of classism. I enjoyed it. Just about nobody is a good person in this book, especially the main character. I especially liked the subtle exploration of classism and “making it” that is tied into this psychological horror. The performance was good except for the voice given to the Eddie character, which was supposed to make him sound gentle and naive but really just sounded like an adult trying to sound like a small child. It was more queer than I expected but could have been gayer (but then again, I always wish that lol).

A Fierce Debut that Demands to be Seen AND Heard

I was initially pointed to this by a "feminist rage" Book Tok video, so I wasn't fully sure what to expect when reading it, but the result is far more complex and entertaining than I thought it'd be.

Irina is such a well written and interesting character: a girl who's always straddled the line of disaster (whether intentional or forcefully), who refuses to be taken advantage of the men trying to control her/life. She is violent*, watches grimey films (she owns plenty of video nasties, and other banned films in the U.K.), is a funny asshole to the weaker people in her life, and doesn't know exactly what to make of Eddie, the seemingly first "nice guy" she's been around.

There's a lot of themes going on here, with Clark very much playing with the power dynamic between a photographer and subject, and using that as a metaphor for consent and the dangerous situations men put women in. I think when going into this I expected the female rage to be directed towards men, and while Irina hilariously degrades and demands a higher status than the men she interacts with, the rage is actually directed at the world. It's a frustration pushed to the extreme, for not being seen or heard or valued, and being pushed to the side by everyone saying they know what's best for you without ever bothering to ask.

I was thinking about Alex Garland's "Men" a lot while listening to this. Take that for what it is, but this was far more entertaining. I loved it quite a bit. Its funny and dynamic, and all of the movie name-drops were fun to pick up on (I even added a few to my watchlist). Clark did an AMAZING job with her narration. Irina, Flo, and Eddie all felt so three dimensional and whole. I seriously recommend the audiobook to anyone interested.
