Disappointed in How the MC Dealt with a Female Character
Reviewed: 05-24-24
I am mostly likely not finishing these books. I was a little over eight hours into the book, and I was so disappointed with the reaction of the MC towards the circumstances of a female character. He showed no lack of empathy and was incredibly judgmental especially considering how he grew up on the streets in abject poverty. His reaction should an enormous amount of immaturity for his ilk.
The narrator did an excellent job, and I’m so disappointed that I won’t be finishing the book, but I will check out some otherbooks they’ve narrated.

Story
Lexi Seymour thinks she’s seen it all when she finds herself in an arranged marriage. And she hasn’t even met the groom yet....When she first sets eyes on him at the engagement ball, only one thought pops into her mind: Is it even legal to marry a teenage alien? And then, another one: Why does his brother seem like a way better option? Sure, she wants to help Earth keep the peace, but what about her peace of mind? That arrogant, blue-scaled alien prince and his wicked grin sure are messing with it....

Reviewed: 04-17-22
I wasn’t sure I would enjoy the story since I was concerned there’d be a love triangle, but that was not an issue. I appreciated that the female MC stood up for herself. Also the narration was excellent. It definitely added to the story.

The romantic & comedic tale of a crocheter and woodworker
Reviewed: 11-20-21
I love the positive and realistic portrayal of a single dad. Also it’s wonderful to see the male MC accept help and friendship. Now as a lover of all things yarn—especially crochet—I really enjoyed the female MC’s hobby and the mention of Etsy and Pinterest.
A great holiday romantic comedy with just the right amount of steam.
The narrators were excellent.

Story
Some call him friend or boss. Some call him husband or dad. Some call him son, even a favorite son. But the only title that matters to him is the one the media has given him: the Poet. A name he earned from the written words he leaves behind after he kills that are as dark and mysterious as the reason he chooses his victims. One word, two, three, a story in a poem, a secret that only Detective Samantha Jazz can solve. Because, he’s writing this story for her.

Interesting mystery involving poetry

I enjoyed the story premise well enough to finish it. The narrators did an excellent job. I just did not find that the protagonist had much depth. Sadly, she reminded me of a lot of 1980s tv police detective, e.g., Hunter, especially her interactions with her captain. Also, the name choice for her last name seem even more suited for 80s television.

I may be a shy letter carrier, but when my beloved apartment building is threatened by a mysterious and reclusive billionaire, I’m willing to push the envelope. I’m going to march right up to Malcolm Blackberg’s fortress of fierceness and deliver a cease-and-desist notice he can’t refuse. Except as soon as I get inside his gilded doors, things go sideways - I’m mistaken for Malcolm’s court-ordered emotional intelligence coach, as if I’m acting out a wacky postal carrier cosplay.

The actions of nearly everyone in this book perfectly demonstrates the selfishness of far too many people. I’m not even surprised at the main character’s actions. If she were a real person, I’d advise her believe when people show you who they are.

Story
When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules - a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the Lone Star State, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home. When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders - a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman - have stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment.

After listening to Attica Locke's previous novel Pleasantville, I eagerly used a credit to purchase Bluebird, Bluebird. Bluebird, Bluebird does not disappoint! The historical context was definitely a plus, and I love that the protagonist is not only a Texas Ranger, but comes from a landed, well-established Black family. The characters' flaws give the book so much more flavor. I'm looking forward to listening to & reading the sequel.

I love listening to this audiobook! The reader did a great job with portraying the different characters. Also the toning down of the language doesn't diminish the story--still action-packed with a good amount of thrill.

Yay! More The Word and The Void
Reviewed: 03-11-17
I have listened to and enjoyed the previous audio version of this book (George Wilson), but was disappointed that only Running with the Demon was available on audible--until now.
At first listen, the multiple pauses of the new reader was extremely distracting. I actually changed the playback speed to 1.25x to counteract it. He does an adequate job once I got past the first 12-15 minutes with the exception of how he pronounced O'olish Amaneh's name--that was cringeworthy.
The three books in this series are some of my favorites. I've read them several times since being in my twenties. Nest Freemark, her grandparents, and John Ross are very relatable, and their storylines are enjoyable.
Despite my initial misgivings, I would recommend this book, and it's prequel, Running with the Demon. I hope audible will make the sequel, Angel Fire East, available too.
