Disaster. There was no other word to describe how Operation Olympic had changed in a flash from a triumph to the worst failure the Merry Band of Pirates had ever experienced. A failure that meant the fight was over. Unless the Pirates could perform a miracle, without Skippy.

love this series. this os a great listen some of the books have been up and down a bit and in my book this one is pn the upside. I do strongly suggest starting from book one. I'm also wondering if the Skippy personality is living rent free in the author's brain 24/7. don't know how he has done so well through so many books.

Story
The year is 1989. America has just invaded Noriega's Panama. And Specialist Bennett's platoon of Cav Scouts are in country… with, frankly, not a whole lot to do. Until a freak rainstorm somehow transports the entire platoon—Humvees, weapons, and all—to another world. A world controlled by a wicked Aztec god. The Land of the Black Sun. In a heartbeat, the Scouts find themselves fighting for their lives against savage beasts, witches, zombies, subhuman tribes seeking sacrifices… and even themselves.

interesting multiversity scenario. Well written and paced. Good performance helps through some of the more bizarre portions. Overall I think it's worth the credits.

Story
As if nearly burning up in a freak accident on her way to Earth wasn't bad enough, Daisy had a whole mess of other trouble on her plate. Big trouble. And she was going to get to the bottom of it if it was the last thing she'd do, which it was starting to look like it very well might be. The thing is, Daisy had a simple rule for space travel. Don't blow up, and so far she'd been managing to abide by that, but mere survival wasn't enough.

The set is a decent value but series is meh

The book set us the only way I would buy these. I go through a lot of books. The first book starts a little slow but the story winds up and goes until book three. Where things become spotty from a story perspective. The culmination in book 5 is predictable. I couldn't even finish listening to the last book.

A good addition to the series. The action the series had plus some new intrigue and a shift in story line to hive the series more legs.

As with a lot of long running series this one has had some ups and downs. The storyline of this book was less meandering than some of the others and brought focus back to main characters whom I enjoy.
Overall a consistent performance and a decent story that was reminiscent of mid series books more than the last few. If you feel like the last two or three books were "Meh" then I think you will gain some faith back from The Lost Nebula.

Love the series but this one seems phoned in...
Reviewed: 07-28-22
Definitely my least favorite in the series. lots of RANDOM jumps... character weirdness and a vague meandering storyline.
I'm hoping this is just a transition book that was too short. It lacks the interesting cliff hangers of most of the rest of the series. I guess it opens up enough potential story lines to keep the series going. Always better to start series from the beginning... but I feel like if you aren't vested when you listen to this book it could be a real turn off for a lot of fans.

So, I enjoyed the renegade star series and generally like Chenney. Some of the reviews prevented me from pulling the trigger on the series. Once this came included in Audible I had know excuse. 4 purchased books later I think it's a very good series.
Space opera-esk detective. Definately not military Sci fi. No cutting edge physics or science concept. Whole series is character driven with q who done it style of plot.
The performance is excellent.

What peace Helo had hoped for by defeating King on the Tempest is short-lived. Evil doesn’t go quietly, and it’s always hungry for revenge. After his parents are murdered, Helo rejoins the Ash Angel Organization ready to hunt creatures of evil and obliterate the six remaining Dread Loremasters. But terrifying portents from Tela Mirren’s dreams and dire warnings from Aclima hint that crossing darkness incurs a terrible price, and Helo will be the one who pays.

I was pleasantly surprised with the twisting plot, not overly religious tone and wonderful characters. also yet another winning performance by RC Bray.

So, I am used to Sci fi books rehashing history up until a point. Often in thinking about things in retrospect it seems obvious even thought provoking. In this case it is unimaginative and boring.
If you know WW2 history this is an annoying yawner with sub par character development. If you don't... maybe it would be OK.
