Story
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.

Full of heart, laugh out loud funny, and very real

This is one of my all time favorite audiobook experiences. Beautiful and moving plot, characters you fall in love with, and full belly laughs from time to time. I am hesitant to write this but…this felt like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants but for adults who have seen some shit.

In this compulsively listenable tale of secrets, lies, and deception, Gilly Macmillan explores the darkest impulses and desires of the human heart. Diabolically clever, The Nanny reminds us that sometimes the truth hurts so much you’d rather hear the lie.

This was an excellent audiobook and a wonderfully crafted story about motherhood that also kept me on the edge of my seat in frustration for what happened next.

Cute, Funny, Spooky
Reviewed: 05-28-25
This was an honest YA folk monster series with characters you adore and some really good sarcasm/one liners. Fun and not too spooky. The storyline leans more toward the younger side of YA fiction, but it was still a good and entertaining listen.

Not her best but kept my attention

I typically enjoy the psychological back and forth of McFaddens stories, but this one annoyed me a bit. I appreciate the slow build in the plot that demonstrated what it’s like to be gaslit into becoming a completely ignorant version of oneself—but my compassion only extended so far and I found myself wanting to punch the wife in the face.
I also enjoy not being able to guess what McFadden will do next but I pretty much guessed every turn on this one.

Newly-minted child psychologist Mina has little experience. In a field where the first people called are experts, she’s been unable to get her feet wet. Instead, she aimlessly spends her days stuck in the stifling heat wave sweeping across Britain, and anxiously contemplating her upcoming marriage to careful, precise researcher Oscar. The only reprieve from her small, close world is attending the local bereavement group to mourn her brother’s death from years ago. That is, until she meets journalist Sam Hunter at the grief group one day. And he has a proposition for her.

Atmospheric, well written, eerie story that compels the reader/listener to keep flipping to the next page. There were a few plot lines I felt were a little loosely threaded but regardless I found this a worthy title.

This is a zombie apocalypse story that isn’t super depressing and dark. It has its moments of “ick” so far as gore and in-humanity…but it never crosses the line.
