A good book, but a bit fawning

Definitely a definitive look at a brilliant musician, but at times, especially the last few chapters, it reads more like a tribute than a biography. still, it’s extremely well researched and thoughtfully presented.

Story
Only a very few rock bands that have had the longevity, success, and drama of The Doobie Brothers. Born out of late 1960s NoCal, they stood alongside their contemporaries The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, and many others as an iconic American rock band. The train was rolling along, hits were flowing like wine, and arenas were packed with fans who wanted to see them live...then Tom Johnston, the band’s front man and lead guitarist, almost died.

I thoroughly enjoyed this bio of a truly great and historic band. The performance was excellent as well. One quibble, though: it was a lot of repetition as different participants recalled the same events, which could’ve been tightened up a bit and edited. Other than that, though, it was great.

I saw another reviewer describe this as a perfect blend of history and personal experience, and that hits the mark. I have never seen outlander and don’t care about it, but I found much here to enjoy in these two wonderful actors. Definitely recommended for anyone who loves Scotland, and also to anyone looking for an inspiring and laugh out loud, audio experience.

According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655, before she exploded), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan.

This is one of my favorite books ever. I’ve read it in print, enjoyed the BBC and television versions, and now three different audiobook representations. This life cast audiobook is as good as any of them, and better than most. Really excellent and highly recommended. If you love this book, like I do, don’t miss this recording.

A well researched bio of a fascinating and important character. There’s a lot here and the author clearly put a lot in. However, the narrator’s attempts at southern and German accents are unnecessary and distracting.

Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of World War II. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945. Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the twentieth century, The Second World War. Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on World War II.

I know what you may be thinking. I was as well. Do we really need yet another book about the Second World War? I checked it out because of my familiarity with some of the author’s previous work. I can’t tell you how many books I’ve read on the same topic, and yet there were things here of which I was not aware and learned for the first time. to be sure, it is not perfect. The author seems intent on deflating the myths of Roosevelt, Churchill, Eisenhower, Montgomery, et al, And there is considerable discussion, maybe even excessive, of instances of rape and cannibalism throughout the work. All that being said, though, this book is a tremendous achievement in its field.
