Story
For the handful of scattered Jedi, survival is imperative if the light side of the Force is to be protected and the galaxy somehow, someday reclaimed. Yet more important still is the well-being of the twin infants, Leia and Luke Skywalker, the children of Anakin and his doomed bride, Padme Amidala. Separated after Padme's death, they must be made safe at all costs, lest the hope they represent for the future be turned to horror by the new Sith regime, and the unspeakable power of the dark side.

Darth Vader is not the focus
Reviewed: 02-15-24
I've heard this is an abridged version, and I'm not sure if that's true or not. But in any case, I was hoping for a lot more of Darth Vader. This book felt way more focused on the story of a group of Jedi that we don't know about and how they dealt with the events of Revenge of the Sith than on the newly anointed dark lord of the Sith.
That being said, it's a good story. It's well written with the motivations of the various Jedi pretty understandable, with only one sort of ham concept put in there, which I didn't really mind that much. It's good, worth a listen. I would really like to be able to more easily re-listen to just the Vader parts, but the way the chapters are divided makes it far more difficult than it should be.
Here's a start:
Chapter II 00:00 - 17:03
Chapter II 21:21 - 31:12
Chapter II 36:06 - 42:15
Chapter II 51:54 - 1:00:12
Chapter II 1:03:10 - 1:06:33

Strong world building
Reviewed: 07-03-23
This was a great look at the house of Organa a few years prior to Battle of Yavin. They did a good job with character building and creating interesting scenarios. It was unfortunately brought down a little bit by some unnecessarily cheesy moments that took me out of the story.
For example, I loved the idea of Panaka they came up with and the character interaction, but I hated the story ark of what they did with it. A big miss there imo. Also the end was a little overly ironic, don't love that sort of thing, but maybe others would.
I focused on the negative because I hope they are improved upon for future stories, but I gave it a 4 and that's very high marks from me.

a little silly, still enjoyable
Reviewed: 11-28-22
The first part of the series starts strong, but 2 and 3 go down a little as the focus seems taken away from flying xwings. The Bacta war brings it back, but doesn't get quite as strong as the opening book.
the series is overall a little silly. I can't take it as seriously as the best of the eu, but it's still a fun series, and flies circles around the travesty of the Disney sequels. grateful we have at long last the unabridged adoptions, please keep these coming.

Story
Thrawn’s latest triumph still rests newly on his shoulders. He has led the Chiss to victory and brought glory to the House of Mitth, but the true threat to the Ascendancy has not yet been extinguished. Their foes do not send threats or ultimatums, do not mass ships on the edge of the Chaos. Their weapons come cloaked in smiles and generosity: Gifts offered freely. Services granted unconditionally. Across the Ascendancy, seemingly inconsequential events could herald the doom of the Chiss.

A rare miss from this power duo.
Reviewed: 11-13-21
Zahn/Thompson is normally unbeatable, but this story just wasn't good. The story kept going to characters I didn't care anything about and were very boring, and these charaxters were voiced in such a way to be incredibly obnoxious on top of it. it literally took me a year to get through it just in time for the final book in the series. I hope Zahn gets back to following the characters his readers care about, and introducing new characters in a way that is interesting to the reader.

“I have sensed a disturbance in the Force.” Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root - its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn.

A great Thrawn story weighed down by a detour
Reviewed: 08-04-18
I found the jumping back and forth between two separate stories on two separate timelines annoying and distracting. it was a much better listen the second time through skipping the Anakin/Padme story. Wish Zahn was the canonmaster at disney. But where the Canon had failed, I'm happy to follow the Zhanon.

You think a lot of things are important. But nothing is as important as keeping us out of the situation where nuclear missiles start flying. Horton is the most important thinker on the most important issue. This book outlines what you need to know about our post cold war interventionism, and goes into detail on the atrocities the US has committed, and what it has gotten us.

The one real difference between the American press and the Soviet state newspaper Pravda was that the Russian people knew they were being lied to. To expose the lies our media tell us today, controversial journalist James O'Keefe created Project Veritas, an independent news organization whose reporters go where traditional journalists dare not. Their investigative work - equal parts James Bond, Mike Wallace, and Saul Alinsky - has had a consistent and powerful impact on its targets.
