Story
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

Convenient plot points & annoying music
Reviewed: 06-10-24
This one would’ve been a lot better if they had not added so much music for the podcast portions. Overall the story kept me listening but the narrators voice for Lucy had a northeast coast accent that came through which was odd since Lucy grew up in small town Texas. Five years away isn’t time enough to erase a good twang. It takes much longer. Probably would’ve been better to read this book instead of listen. That being said, there were still some things that seemed to be put in there just to make it an adult book and didn’t really seem plausible.

Story
One year ago, Isabelle Drake's life changed forever: her toddler son, Mason, was taken out of his crib in the middle of the night while she and her husband were asleep in the next room. With little evidence and few leads for the police to chase, the case quickly went cold. However, Isabelle cannot rest until Mason is returned to her—literally. Except for the occasional catnap or small blackout where she loses track of time, she hasn’t slept in a year. Isabelle's entire existence now revolves around finding him, but she knows she can’t go on this way forever.

Kept me listening
Reviewed: 04-25-24
The plot and characters were interesting and well developed for the most part. It sure kept me listening. However, I felt the women in general were too easily manipulated and then given passes for their actions because of it. As a woman myself, I found that a bit frustrating. It was also convenient for the story line. There were some other “too convenient” coincidences as well but I don’t want to spoil the story. Overall, still a very interesting listen and kept me entertained.

So, when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically. The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything.

I love historical fiction in general but this one stepped it up a notch, throwing in mystery, romance, and feminine power as well.

Good narration for a great story
Reviewed: 10-23-23
Historical fiction is always my favorite way to peak my (and my kids’) interest in historical events and people. This book does a great job introducing the details of the Emmet Till murder and trial through the eyes of a concerned teenager in the Mississippi community where it occurred. It’s a heart wrenching story about racism, prejudice, relationships, politics, the justice system, and a persons responsibility to stand up for what is right, no matter what.

Everyone from Wakarusa, Indiana, remembers the infamous case of January Jacobs, who was discovered in a ditch hours after her family awoke to find her gone. Margot Davies was six at the time, the same age as January—and they were next-door neighbors. In the twenty years since, Margot has grown up, moved away, and become a big-city journalist. But she’s always been haunted by the feeling that it could’ve been her. And the worst part is, January’s killer has never been brought to justice.

The ending? What?
Reviewed: 07-19-23
This is an unbiased review, because I am not a listener of the associated podcast by this author, and came to this book without hearing anything about it previously. It was recommended by a friend. I really enjoyed the book and it’s plot twists, and the overall rating style. However, I thought the scene (spoiler alert) where her uncle doesn’t recognize her and she is trying to explain who she is, seemed to go on too long. She knew earlier to
Simply jog her uncles memory by reminding him of his nickname for her. Yet in this scene where he threatens her life, she didn’t do that until it had gone on for a long time. In addition, the relationship between the police officer and herself didn’t seem fully developed enough, and just forgotten about by the end of the book, and his kind reactions to her rude treatment of him seemed implausible. He could’ve been a more real character instead of so contrived. But the thing that made me give this 4 stars instead of five overall was the ending or lack there of. Is this a part one of a two part book series? And why have an epilogue after an ending like that from a completely different characters point of view that still doesn’t actually resolve anything in the book beyond giving a little more backstory? The narrator for that epilogue was also quite bland and expression list compared to the narrators for the rest of the book.

Reads like a textbook rather than the moving stories they could be. Narrator was like a teachers voice and the writing style was very boring as well.

Story
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Just the right amount of Sci-Fi
Reviewed: 01-12-22
I am not that knowledgeable when it comes to science and math. As an artist those were never my strong suit so I was wondering if I would enjoy an adult science fiction novel. But I didn’t have to wonder for long. This novel has just the right amount of math and science to make it completely interesting and believable but not overwhelming. Love this book. The performance was amazing the story was gripping and it left a big impression on me. I highly recommend it
