About this listen

"Reader Vacker does a remarkable job voicing the main characters and keeping the tension high....Mystery and true crime fans will be drawn in and ultimately satisfied by this complex, tense tale read expertly by a talented narrator."—Booklist

"[Karissa] Vacker switches easily between the higher female voices and the lower male voices, creating recognizable and believable characters.... Listeners will enjoy a gripping and twisty story." (AudioFile on Earphones Award winner A Flicker in the Dark)

Following up her instant New York Times bestseller, A Flicker in the Dark, Stacy Willingham delivers a totally gripping thriller about a desperate mother with a troubled past in All the Dangerous Things.

One year ago, Isabelle Drake's life changed forever: her toddler son, Mason, was taken out of his crib in the middle of the night while she and her husband were asleep in the next room. With little evidence and few leads for the police to chase, the case quickly went cold. However, Isabelle cannot rest until Mason is returned to her—literally.

Except for the occasional catnap or small blackout where she loses track of time, she hasn’t slept in a year.

Isabelle's entire existence now revolves around finding him, but she knows she can’t go on this way forever. In hopes of jarring loose a new witness or buried clue, she agrees to be interviewed by a true-crime podcaster—but his interest in Isabelle's past makes her nervous. His incessant questioning paired with her severe insomnia has brought up uncomfortable memories from her own childhood, making Isabelle start to doubt her recollection of the night of Mason’s disappearance, as well as second-guess who she can trust... including herself. But she is determined to figure out the truth no matter where it leads.

Critic reviews

"True crime's trending appeal and Willingham's mastery of the domestic mystery promise popularity for this one... those who crave resolution will appreciate that Willingham tucks the story's ends in tight."–Booklist (starred review)

"[A] lyrical thriller... this involving, thought-provoking page-turner raises disturbing questions about the nature of the stories people tell themselves to make sense of the world. Willingham remains an author to watch."—Publishers Weekly

"Pacey and sinister, All the Dangerous Things has a palpable tension that keeps the pages turning."—Karin Slaughter

Great book

This was one of the best books I’ve read so far this year. So many twists and turns, and I didn’t see the ending coming.

Well written and great narration!

A great new author. The level of character detail makes you feel like you’re in the room with them. The narrator does a great job with the range of voices.

I have found a new author!!!

I’ve try so many books often with disappointing results. I listened to A Flicker In The Dark and it was so good it made me hungry for more only to find they’re were only two. I will preorder her next book. If you want to feel like your credits have been spent wisely just save the time and order both of them. The only disappointment will be that they’re only two!

Book Review

Isabelle Drake felt loneliness and guilt ever since the night her son, Mason went missing. Isabelle talks to the public about the loss off her son, but her husband isn’t standing beside her. Ben has moved on, just like he moved onto Isabelle after the death of his first wife. Where is Mason? Should Isabelle retrace her steps? Should she look into her past for answers and regain her confidence.

Only the scent of Southern

The story is set in the Deep South. Isabelle is born and raised in the Lowcountry. She speaks often of the smell of the marsh and the pluff mud. But, the sense of place is lost the moment the Narrator speaks. There is no South in her mouth, at all.

Very good book

I have read the author’s debut novel and liked it, so I thought I would give this one a try. This book was even better than her first novel. There were some similarities in the “formula” of both novels, but the details and twists were distinct. It did not feel like reading the same novel, as some other reviewers have stated. I did figure out who-dun-it and all the other “twists” long before they were revealed, but they were still well done and cleverly written. Also, the author handles topics like postpartum depression and mom guilt very well. I also liked the way the author talked about the violence that we typically don’t think of when we hear that word. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good listen.
