Story
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Totally depressing
Reviewed: 12-09-23
This book was referred to me as “amazing, must read” by a friend. Now I wonder what is wrong with her? It was depressing, annoying, and too long. No redeeming quality unless one wishes to read about abuse, both physical and mental. I continued to the end hoping for a glimmer of happiness.

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

This could have been such an enjoyable book. I don’t want to waste my time or pay to hear her dislike of Catholics and men. Depressing, really.

At the center of Home Again is Madelaine - a brilliant cardiologist, a loving mother, a tender friend, and a woman full of self-doubt. It is also the story of her confused and angry daughter, Lina, and of the two very different men Madelaine loves: Francis, a priest searching for his faith, and Angel, a talented but cynical man with a broken heart. When tragedy suddenly brings them all together, they must learn to forgive the betrayals of the past and find the courage to love again.

Story
There’s a story out there buried in the muck, and Jordan Walsh, coming from a family of esteemed reporters, wants to be the one to dig it up. But it’s 1955, and the men who dominate the city room of the Chicago Tribune have no interest in making room for a female cub reporter. Instead Jordan is relegated to society news, reporting on Marilyn Monroe sightings at the Pump Room and interviewing secretaries for the White Collar Girl column. Of course, that all changes the moment she establishes a secret source inside Mayor Daley’s office.

Don’t waste your time. The narrator’s accent was awful, the storyline was too long, trite and totally predictable.
I purchased this title because I am interested in winemaking, Napa Valley and Italy. This was totally disappointing. I skipped many chapters to hear the ending and it was completely predictable.

Reviewed: 08-27-19
I had read the rave reviews and was prepared for a historical drama. If you love fashion, don’t read this book - it’s not about fashion. If you love design, don’t read this book it’s not about design. I slogged through 50% but just gave up - I no longer cared about any of the characters. The plot is confusing and all over the place. I don’t know how the author finished the story but I won’t buy another of her books.
