Nero Wolfe twist - women focused, excellent voice

2nd in series, which I ate up, after listening to the first, after reading recommendations from Librarians Top Picks. Anyone who's a huge fan of Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin and is game for a new twist, start listening to this series immediately. I wish I thought of this combo myself, but would never get the voice right. Lillian Pentecost is the great genius, but her reluctance to move around is due to MS, and her leg man is a woman, Willowjean Parker, with all the sass and street smarts of Archie. do not miss this series!

Story only mildly intriguing. I've read and listened to many well written and well plotted middle grade mysteries with great, gutsy, creative main characters, especially female protagonists. This isn't one of them. Just did not connect with the storyteller and felt she came off pretty clueless and flat for a braniac student. I also figured out key clues or supposed surprises or twists well before she does. Don't get why anyone would be enamored by "the nobility" even if you were a middle grader. I think middle schoolers would find the story lacking. But those who are fans of books about rich kids behaving badly or just more superior than others might like it. Just not for me.

Terry Hatchett-esque whimsical adventure with mystery thrown in. Fab narrator ala Jim Dale. Witty fun!

The narrator was fabulous, felt like I was there, like I was hearing Z's voice. I loved the connection and parallels with Austen's Pride and Prejudice, yet this is a wonderful story even without that comparison. I like the way that's a layer that adds even more depth but that the story isn't bending over backward to accommodate every detail of the original. Z's poetry is an amazing bonus (actually Ibi Zoboi's I imagine), making her seem so real. I want to know her too. The pride issue around gentrification and neighborhoods changing adds depth and encourages and challenges discussion and thought. Insight into Haitian spiritual traditions and culture was intriguing as well. Can't recommend this book enough.

Really don't bother. This is not one of Heyer's sparkling, witty stories, with fun twists and turns.
Spend your credits on something like The Grand Sophy or Fredericka.

Narrator great for this story. Love main character Don, genetics professor, probably on the spectrum, and his friends who help him negotiate dating--and all the near misses he doesn't realize are offered to him. Love how he stumbles into things he can do well.

Despite being a writer for years, this book gave me new ways to view and approach my own writing, from keeping myself motivated to how to work with a critique group--in this case a brain trust. Wonderful ideas for managing creative talents and any sort of staff. I really appreciated the candor put forth about struggles as well as successes.
