Miep Gies and Alison Leslie Gold have created a beautiful, but heartbreaking story of how the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands affected the lives of those caught there. They bring everyday events in the 1930-40's alive - for example, it was fascinating to learn how everyone rode bicycles everywhere and all year long. They give an inside look at what normal people were doing in that time period. It is a story of friendships, love and the cruelty of wartime to innocent civilians. Miep Gies was a loyal employee of Mr. Frank and became a close friend of his family. She and her husband, along with a few other friends took it upon themselves to support the Franks in hiding and attempt to keep them safe. The hardships that they endured along with the horrible treatment of the Jews is a true testament to the strength of wartime survival. It was a fascinating biography.

As a student of Russian history, I found this story to be intriguing. The main character is the aging mother and her daughters quest to understand her. Gradually the mother's past in communist Russia becomes known and explains her strange behavior. In addition, I loved the setting of the northwest US and the apple industry. It was all very different and captivating. It wasn't a happy story until the end, but the journey was worth the sadness.

I couldn't stop listening as this classic Baldacci mystery unfolded. I love the "memory man" character and his interaction with the other major players. His unique condition that leads to great crime solving skills is fascinating. This story gives you a inside look at the death penalty and complications that occur in those cases.
I highly recommend this one!

What appears to be a simple story of a wealthy family in a planned community in Ohio, becomes a "wake up" call when they rent to Mia and her daughter, Pearl. Mia is a classic starving artist and as her history unfolds, it becomes evident that what you see on the surface is far from the actual truth! The comparison of the two mothers - Mrs. Richardson, the wealthy landlord, and Mia, the struggling artist/tenant/employee is a real lesson in parenting & life skills The friendships that develop between their children is also a fascinating look at teenagers and their needs.
I highly recommend this book. I couldn't stop listening to it!
