Story
They say you can never go home again, and for Persephone Fraser, ever since she made the biggest mistake of her life a decade ago, that has felt too true. Instead of glittering summers on the lakeshore of her childhood, she spends them in a stylish apartment in the city, going out with friends, and keeping everyone a safe distance from her heart. Until she receives the call that sends her racing back to Barry’s Bay and into the orbit of Sam Florek—the man she never thought she’d have to live without.

Why all the glowing reviews?

I feel like I was catfished with this book and the reviews I read prior to purchasing. This book was so basic, that I don’t even know the words to describe it. The characters were flat. The story was something out of a hallmark movie and the whole thing was predictable. The people who rated this as amazing and unbelievable apparently have zero going on in their lives or had a super basic childhood. 9 hours of my life that I will never get back. Shame.

Story
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

This book was definitely one that kept me guessing but guessing in all the wrong ways if that makes sense. For whatever reason I do not enjoy this author’s writing style and I did not connect her to another book I read and felt the same way towards until it popped up in my recommended reads. For me, this book just fell short. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t amazing. Had I made the connection prior to purchasing the book, I wouldn’t have purchased.

I had no idea it was a true story!

I don’t know how I missed this but once I found out at the end this story became 1000x better. Wow. What an emotional roller coaster. I am not going to lie, there were times I questioned if I could even finish it because it was so hard to hear and even harder to understand how this genocide happened in a world we lived in. Yet alone, how many years passed before we even acknowledged it. It’s heartbreaking, but it does fill the reader with hope, even at the darkest times and that’s why I think this story is remarkable. 1000+ stars.

I felt like I was watching a Disney series
Reviewed: 04-24-24
I was half tempted to return this book after the first couple of chapters. It was extremely juvenile and even the narrators voice just made it seem like something right off the Disney channel. Don’t get me wrong there’s definitely a twist at the end, but compared to how short they reveal the twist compared to how long the book is, it just didn’t make sense. I was disappointed in this book especially since I have enjoyed Frida’s other books. Oh well, maybe next time.

I was happy to see that she just narrated the third book and I am hoping that she continues to do the whole series. the story is mesmerizing and adventurous. So happy that a friend recommended this and beyond excited that there are so many books. The narrator makes this book unreal, and takes the characters to the next level. she is beyond talented!

I couldn’t get enough of this book. Mainly because I loved the audio visuals of this book. It reminded me of the Sandman series. It was perfect in every way. You might think you have the story figured out, but think again. Remember none of this is true. Had me captivated until the every last sentence. Highly recommend this book. SHOCKED it hasn’t gotten enough praise and popularity. It is right up there with Big Little Lies and Gone Girl. Hey Netflix, you might want to jump on this!

This was such a wonderful continuation of the series. I am eagerly awaiting the next one. This author has a knack for seriously making you second guess yourself just when you thought you had the storyline figured out. Subtle clues woven in throughout the storyline, that reappear towards the end, make you hang on her every word. I went into this book vowing to pay close attention to everything , and yet at the end I still was at a loss on how she makes everything come together. It’s truly an art and a talent!!! Excited to start her other books. Glad I stumbled upon this series.

When I first started this I got a The Last Mrs. Parrish vibe but yet it was so much better. The thought process behind this story shows and nothing is left unsaid or unanswered. I recommend this book hands down. Excited to read more from this author but also a little fearful her others won’t live up to the high standard this book set. Five stars all the way.
