I used to think this book was really good. It’s not just that, it’s a masterpiece. The reader is perfect for the genre and period and doesn’t overplay it more than a movie would. The character is, of course, unforgettable, but the plot is more intricate than you’d remember and it doesn’t require much suspension of belief. It’s a terrific job.

In Len Deighton's second novel of the classic spy trilogy, Faith, Hope, Charity, Bernard Samson is trying to readjust his life after his wife, Fiona, defected to the East. As the Berlin Wall begins to crumble, loyalties seem to change along with the freezing wind. Caught between his job and his ethics, his past and his future, and the two women he loves, Samson embarks on his most sensational mission yet—from rural Poland to London Central. In this intricately plotted novel of changing loyalties, deception, and danger, Bernard Samson is in top form. And he has only himself to depend on.

This is a character who becomes a friend. There are few like him. It’s not just a spy series: it’s a true arc.

Story
The Bobiverse is a different place in the aftermath of the Starfleet War, and the days of the Bobs gathering in one big happy moot are far behind. There’s anti-Bob sentiment on multiple planets, the Skippies playing with an AI time bomb, and multiple Bobs just wanting to get away from it all. But it all pales compared to what Icarus and Daedalus discover on their 26,000-year journey to the center of the galaxy.

Story
At the time of the French Revolution, one of Britain's most skillful naval officers, Charles Saunders Hayden, is a young lieutenant, the son of an English father and a French mother. His abilities and his loyalty to the king of England are beyond dispute, yet his career seems doomed by his "mixed" heritage and lack of political connections. Consequently, Hayden is assigned to an aging frigate, the Themis, under the command of Captain Josiah Hart, a man known as "Faint Hart" throughout the service.

Story
Cameron Winter was born with the ability to recreate detailed crime scenes in his imagination and dissect the motives and encounters that produced them. And after reading a puzzling news story about a wealthy family killed in a small town in the Chicago suburbs, he can't resist the chance to apply this deductive power in the pursuit of justice for the victims. Three members of the family, along with their live-in nanny, were pulled from their burning mansion, already dead from gunshot wounds. The only survivor is a young boy whose memory of the event raises more questions than answers.

So many good characters and almost none behaving like cliches. So many plot twists without ever feeling like “now comes the plot twist”. So many insights without feeling like you’re getting another lesson, another mandatory training. I circled this series a long time and I’m so glad I finally committed and bought it.

Story
In a world where the human population has suffered devastating losses, a handful of survivors cling to what passes for life in a postapocalyptic, dying landscape. A world where humans wander, drugged and lulled by electronic bliss. A dying world of no children and no art, where reading is forbidden.

This is a remarkable book
Reviewed: 12-10-23
It’s not a sci-fi in the usual sense. Robots run the world and humans are dying of listless disinterest. Humans can’t repair anything, are forbidden to read or to approach each other. Drug use is universal and encouraged.
(This was copyrighted 2014!)
Two humans, a teacher and a homeless woman, are not satisfied with this and can’t even say why, but over the course of their stories, they slowly discover how life is worth actually living. The narrative is slow because the language picks up their experiences, handles and examines them, and moves forward.
It’s as radical and important as Brave New World and even more relevant. It’s not preachy: the events tell the tale and they’re realistic.
Give this a try! I was tempted to start it over right from the end.
