Story
This remarkable and monumental book at last provides a comprehensive answer to the age-old riddle of whether there are only a small number of "basic stories" in the world. Using a wealth of examples, from ancient myths and folk tales via the plays and novels of great literature to the popular movies and TV soap operas of today, it reveals that there are seven archetypal themes which recur throughout every kind of storytelling.

Astonishingly boring and tedious
Reviewed: 01-23-25
This author uses an almost endless number of words to say very little and to embellish the trivial and attempt to make it appear profound. The entire text could be summarized on a single page without any loss of meaning or value.

Story
"Walden. Yesterday I came here to live." That entry from the journal of Henry David Thoreau, and the intellectual journey it began, would by themselves be enough to place Thoreau in the American pantheon. His attempt to "live deliberately" in a small woods at the edge of his hometown of Concord has been a touchstone for individualists and seekers since the publication of Walden in 1854. But there was much more to Thoreau than his brief experiment in living at Walden Pond.

Beautifully written book on Thoreau. Detailed information on his books, his relationships, the historical context of his writings and his lifelong quest to describe and understand the natural world. An outstanding book that immerses the reader in the Concord and America of Thoreau.

Story
A former member of the State Department's Policy Planning Council, Polk describes a country and a history misunderstood by many in the West. While Iranians chafe under the yolk of their current leaders, they also have bitter memories of generations of British, Russian, and American espionage, invasion, and dominance. There are important lessons to be learned from the past, and Polk teases them out of a long and rich history and shows that it is not just now, but for decades to come that an understanding of Iran will be essential to American safety and well-being.

So boring. All author does is recite a catalog of languages with a sample of words from each. There are profound insights like languages spoken in higher mountains differ from those spoken in lower mountains. Learning benefit is minimal. Shun this one.

Story
These 12 lectures by Professors Cook and Herzman will give you a rounded, fully informed introduction to the luminous Francis of Assisi and will tell the intellectually and spiritually rewarding story of how his influence has glowed across the centuries.Just who was Assisi? Despite his continuing influence and the fairly ample writings about him that date from his own time, Francis remains somewhat elusive in history. Yet these lectures expertly unlock two sources that are the most revealing and plentiful-written narratives of Francis's life and the images created for Franciscan churches.

This covers most of the details of the life of Saint Francis. Each section of the course also discusses and describes the medieval environment and culture of the St. Francis. Of course, the life and teaching of Francis are always impressive and inspiring. The presenters do an excellent job of conveying what St. Francis said and how he lived with enthusiasm. They do not preach.

Story
In a major work of scholarship both erudite and very funny, Jeremy Dauber traces the origins of Jewish comedy and its development from Biblical times to the age of Twitter. Organizing his book thematically into what he calls the seven strands of Jewish comedy - including the satirical, the witty, and the vulgar - Dauber explores the ways Jewish comedy has dealt with persecution, assimilation, and diaspora through the ages. He explains the rise and fall of popular comic archetypes such as the Jewish mother, the JAP, and the schlemiel and schlimazel.

This guy-- reading lessons he could use.... YES.. verbal tics... two prominent.. At the end of many sentences he lowers his voice....which I find annoying. Didn't anyone tell him he was dong it? The other is that he does not vary his speech patterns which, to this listener, is tedious to the ears. Another minor defect is that his selection of humor includes too many oft repeated jokes. Good news-- this item from the Plus Catalog is worth every penny I didn't pay for it.

Story
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the most astonishing child prodigy in the history of music, is felt by many people to be the greatest composer who ever lived. Dominated and shaped by a highly intelligent but frustrated and ambitious father, his story sees the development of a unique genius, from precocious and often endearing childhood to liberated fulfillment, unexpected poverty, and a tragically early death. Generously illustrated by Mozart’s music, from his fifth to his final year, this portrait-in-sound reveals a fascinating yet elusive character, drawing richly on the words of the composer himself and those who knew him.

Music is an intrinsic part of everyday life, and yet the history of its development from single notes to multilayered orchestration can seem bewilderingly complex. In his dynamic tour through forty thousand years of music, from prehistoric instruments to modern-day pop, Howard Goodall leads us through the story of music as it happened, idea by idea, so that each musical innovation—harmony, notation, sung theater, the orchestra, dance music, recording—strikes us with its original force.

Bad book for Audible
Reviewed: 03-08-22
Three main issues-- (1) the text discusses scales and other technical aspects of music.. These topics clearly need some form of graphic. For example, to show the difference between types of Medieval church modes and various features of musical notation mentioned in the text. (2) Also, there are many references to musical pieces but there are no musical examples included with the text. (3) The narrator has the distracting and ultimately unlistenable habit of dropping his voice at the end of sentences. What professional reader does that? Who talks that way? Although it is well written, I deleted it.
