Story
The Christmas season offers little cheer for Eileen Dunlop, an unassuming yet disturbed young woman trapped between her role as her alcoholic father's caretaker in a home whose squalor is the talk of the neighborhood and a day job as a secretary at the boys' prison, filled with its own quotidian horrors. Consumed by resentment and self-loathing, Eileen tempers her dreary days with perverse fantasies and dreams of escaping to the big city.

The story unfolds, slowly ever so slowly, as Eileen Dunlop, meets the person who, would change her life forever. Rebecca. Eileen beleaguered by her father, an abusive alcoholic who, treats her badly, and is killing himself slowly, is to say the least depressed and unhappy. The writing is exquisite in the descriptions of /Eileen, her thoughts, mannerisms. I kept waiting for something to happen, something tumultuous, and it finally did.

Story
Mary Karr told the prize-winning tale of her hardscrabble Texas childhood with enough literary verve to spark a renaissance in memoir. The Liar's Club rode the top of The New York Times bestseller list for more than a year, and publications ranging from The New Yorker to People picked it as one of the best books of the year. But it left people wondering: How'd that scrappy kid make it outta there? Cherry dares to tell that story. Karr picks up the trail and dashes off into her teen years with customary sass, only to run up against the paralyzing self-doubt of a girl in bloom.

This audio book is at times gut wrenchingly painful in its descriptions of drug use and the ways it impacted her. The dark places people reside in hard drug use, and its inherent dangers. Poetical prose does not soften the blows of the experiences she lived in and eventually grew from. It does nothing short of amaze me that she can remember what it was like in deep drug induced states but then, she always had a notebook, so I imagine she somehow wrote it down. While no insights into the why's of her behavior are described I was able to extrapolate it from her descriptions of the bleakness she was trying to escape from. A dramatic end rings of hope she finds herself.

Linda Lavin spoke beautifully telling this moving story of the human spirit, the importance of family and a strong courageous girl overcoming the odds against her. Poverty, critical mom, and family problems are not only endured but overcome b the main character . Even better was the books narrative told as if it were an interview about her history by her Grandaughter!

I love her voice as it's very soothing. The only part that I didn't like are the bells as for me the sound is jarring, otherwise the guidance is exceptional.

I remember her fromLaverne and Shirley. Hearing her gritty voice tell her story was a great experience. I didn't know much about her great career so was impressed by her growth in directing. She is funny throughout and this was something I admire, her ability to laugh at difficult occurrences in her life. She is honest and forthright! I recommend this especially if you are interested in movies and want to learn more about her as a director. She's a sweetheart, enjoy!

Story
Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.... Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

If you love Grisham
Reviewed: 02-11-13
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Yes, I would not have had Malcom Bannister the main character leave Nathanr in a Jamaican jail getting beaten up while the main character runs off with his money. The beatings to near death were a painful fact even though he had killed two people along with the main characters indifference.
Which character – as performed by J.D. Jackson – was your favorite?
Not sure there was a favorite character for me, none of them were appealing.
Could you see The Racketeer being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
Yes, Will Smith, or Denzel Washington.
Any additional comments?
This was a good but not great Grisham. If you love Grisham definitely listen and the performance was well done.
