A generation past, the western realms were embroiled in endless war. Then the Destroyer came. From the blood and ashes he left behind, a tenuous alliance rose between the barbarian riders of Parsathe and the walled kingdoms of the south. That alliance is all that stands against the return of an ancient evil - until the barbarian king and queen are slain in an act of bloody betrayal.

Wasn’t sure about this book, but got it anyway. Yes, it started a bit slow, but I stuck with it and the story gripped me. If you are looking for a book with magic, thrills, and a solid romantic story, you’ll like this book. I listened at 1.2 speed, and it did

Pleasantly surprised!

I found this gem while browsing through the catalog. I’ve never read anything by this author, but I decided to give the book a try. Perhaps because I’m a teacher and aspiring writer, I related to Alice. I found myself immersed in the story, and enjoyed her adventure very much. The story was the perfect length and had just the right amount of suspense, thrill, and real-life serious moments. This was a good pick in my view.

So so

While I love JAK writing as any of her personas, I was disappointed by this book and in retrospect the first one of the trilogy as they are practically the same story. I own almost every single book of hers, and love the Society stories, but I can’t say that this time.

Story
Cade had pretended to be someone he wasn't. Worse, he'd used her in his elaborate attempt to catch a man he believed was a crook and a swindler. Though Cade's suspect had escaped, Cade was still around - raw, masculine, overwhelming. He had some unfinished business with the man who had conned his innocent sister, and he needed Jamie's help. But Jamie had some unfinished business, as well: to find out if the man she'd fallen in love with really existed.

Female character was weak. Male character bordered on abusive with his possessiveness. I love JAK, but didn’t like this book at all.
