Not his best novel. The plot is ok but the whole story didn’t get me into the characters. While the narrator has excellent speech, the tone is not to my liking.

Story
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

While putting away books from an estate sale purchase, rare book-dealer Steven Lukas finds a box he's never seen before wedged between books on a high shelf. In it he discovers what looks to be a small diary written entirely in code, a lock of hair, and old photographs of the Fairytale King. It isn't long however, before his excitement turns to fear as he realizes that mysterious others want the diary too - and will apparently kill to get it. Suspecting that his find may contain the secret truth behind Ludwig's death, Steven consults with art historian Sara Lengfeld. Soon they find themselves on the run together, investigating each of Ludwig's three castles for clues....

If it hadn’t been for the epilogue…
Reviewed: 07-19-21
This book was silly in my opinion if I hadn’t heard the epilogue where the author tells of the truths in the story. It was interesting to me as I had lived in Kornwestheim, Germany in the late 1960’s and visited the three castles mentioned in the book. Worth a listen.

This story had me hooked from the beginning. The writing, the poignant story of a musician, the performers all added to my complete envelopment in the listening. I felt I was placed into the life of the story. I cried. Not every book brings such strong emotion. Thank you Mitch Albom for sharing your gift with the world. And a big thank you to the performers who brought this book to life for me.

This is certainly not the usual Coben book as we know it. There are too many characters to keep track of and the story is so complicated that I didn’t know if I wanted to keep listening. I did finish it and thought to myself WHY.

Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger's syndrome. He's hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, though he is brilliant in many ways. But he has a special focus on one subject - forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues him in to crime scenes, and he's always showing up and telling the cops what to do. And he's usually right. But when Jacob's small hometown is rocked by a terrible murder, law enforcement comes to him. Jacob's behaviors are hallmark Asperger's, but they look a lot like guilt to the local police.
