About this listen

The astonishing novel from the number-one New York Times best-selling author Jodi Picoult about a young boy with autism falsely accused of murder.

When your son can't look you in the eye...does that mean he's guilty?

Jacob Hunt is a teen with Asperger's syndrome. He's hopeless at reading social cues or expressing himself well to others, though he is brilliant in many ways. But he has a special focus on one subject - forensic analysis. A police scanner in his room clues him in to crime scenes, and he's always showing up and telling the cops what to do. And he's usually right.

But when Jacob's small hometown is rocked by a terrible murder, law enforcement comes to him. Jacob's behaviors are hallmark Asperger's, but they look a lot like guilt to the local police. Suddenly the Hunt family, who only want to fit in, are directly in the spotlight. For Jacob's mother, Emma, it's a brutal reminder of the intolerance and misunderstanding that always threaten her family. For his brother, Theo, it's another indication why nothing is normal because of Jacob.

And over this small family, the soul-searing question looms: Did Jacob commit murder?

As an Audiobook Addict, I loved that this audiobook has multiple and talented narrators, is lengthy (my money's worth), and is written by an amazing author who takes the time to research her subjects thoroughly. I am the mother of a son with autism and I am always welcome to insight into his thinking process. My mother in law recommended this book to me, after reading it herself. Not only did I appreciate this entertaining, compelling, and sometimes funny story, I loved how she wrote about Jacob and his mother. Many people either misunderstand or make assumptions about the families of autistic children. This book explains very well how I feel about my own son, positive and negative; How I love him to pieces and would do anything for him, as well as the difficulties and feelings of isolation that come with having a child with autism. This story was sweet and had enough suspense to keep me coming back. The characters were very real and I had a hard time turning it off.

Sweet, suspenseful and educational. Try it.

This story kept me riveted right up until the end. The narrators are terrific. I don’t think I’ve ever been so immersed in a story. The characters are complex and the plot skillfully moves through the points of view of each main character. A real pleasure that will linger after it ends.

One of the Best

I'm not sure where to begin. For the most part I really liked this book and I learned so much about Asperger. The core family members, Emma, Jacob and Theo were obviously complex. When I read the synopsis I did not expect the actual story line. The sacrifices the mother made for her son was incredible. I found myself constantly wondering who committed the crime.

Spoiler alert: I still don't know....

The narration was just okay. I actually think the voice of Jacob was the best.

It was hard to stop listening due to the complexity.

Was Justice Done?

However horrible ending. It was rushed and didn't quite leave you wanting more of the author. I was expecting at least a better closing.

Great Insight to children with disabilities.

I fell in love with these characters! This is a wonderful, heartbreaking and complex story that also manages to appeal to readers as incredibly straightforward. I loved the details and intertwined relationships as read by all the different characters. A definite must-read!!

Captivating

I'm also autistic, and this book strikes home but still has some stereotypes in it.

Really strikes home.

At first I didnt like the book but thats because it reminded me of my life growing up with an older brother with special needs; I had my biases. As the story progresses it brings me in and loses me at times but I also couldn’t put it down. (Some of it was kinda predictable, narratively speaking) I haven’t felt like that over a book in a while. As far as the connection between vaccines and Autism, personally didnt bother me. It was one perspective that should be heard. I dont know what its like to have an autistic child and so I wouldn’t know where I would stand if i felt like vaccines did that to my child. But for “Dr” Chris P Hafner to be that upset is kinda embarrassing. I would hope if you read this book you do your own research before coming to a conclusion because of a fictional book. So as far as the book goes, it had me wondering the whole time who did it and at the end I was very pleased my mouth dropped when it all came out. I tied everything nicely. Maybe people have high expectations or something but for someone who listened to this book with an open mind I enjoyed it. Go ahead fall into this book, it wont kill you. :)

It was a ride
