Story
December 1944. Soviet and German troops fight from house to house in the shattered, corpse-strewn suburbs of Budapest. Crazed Hungarian fascists join with die-hard Nazis to slaughter Jews day and night, turning the Danube blood-red. In less than six months, thirty-eight-year-old SS Colonel Adolf Eichmann has sent over half a million Hungarians to the gas chambers in Auschwitz. Now all that prevents him from liquidating Europe's last Jewish ghetto is an unarmed Swedish diplomatic envoy named Raoul Wallenberg.

Story
General George Patton needed a miracle. In December 1944, the Allies found themselves stuck. Rain had plagued the troops daily since September, turning roads into rivers of muck, slowing trucks and tanks to a crawl. A thick ceiling of clouds had grounded American warplanes, allowing the Germans to reinforce. The sprint to Berlin had become a muddy, bloody stalemate, costing thousands of American lives. Patton seethed, desperate for some change, any change, in the weather.

Story
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

The best-selling author of Truman and John Adams, David McCullough has written profiles of exceptional men and women past and present who have not only shaped the course of history or changed how we see the world but whose stories express much that is timeless about the human condition. Story
Once one of Silicon Valley’s greatest success stories, Facebook has been under constant fire for the past five years, roiled by controversies and crises. It turns out that while the tech giant was connecting the world, they were also mishandling users’ data, spreading fake news, and amplifying dangerous, polarizing hate speech.

Consequences of Serving 2 Masters
Reviewed: 11-16-21
All monopolies have the power to serve for good or evil. Those who lead them must understand that fact and be vigilant in self-regulating and preventing abuse. Otherwise the government must act sooner or later. In this case, an unregulated FB Frankenstein on steroids could literally facilitate the destruction of democracies around the globe. Evil- minded liars and extremists are hijacking the platform to further their hateful agendas— to manipulate the “news” and the minds of users. All while the FB algorithm continues its ever-more effective cycle of pushing more and more poisonous crack on too many of its addicted users. The moment of truth is here: do we bury our collective heads in the sand and ignore what is happening?

Hampton Sides' superb account of this epic clash in the Korean War relies on years of archival research, unpublished letters, declassified documents, and interviews with scores of marines and Koreans who survived the siege. While expertly detailing the follies of the American leaders, On Desperate Ground is an immediate, grunt's-eye view of history, enthralling in its narrative pace and powerful in its portrayal of what ordinary men are capable of in the most extreme circumstances.

American Sacrifices & Heroes Defending South Korea
Reviewed: 01-03-20
Riveting true story of the tragic mis-steps, erroneous assumptions and triumphs of US generals as America was thrust into the bloody conflict on the Korean peninsula following the invasion of South Korea by Soviet-backed North Korea. When Mao send hundreds of thousands of Chinese soldiers against the Americans and UN forces, the world was literally on the brink of World War Three. The history focuses on the uncommon heroism of the US soldiers who fought against almost impossible odds in freezing conditions and overwhelming enemy numbers. Excellent narration and highly compelling history. Every American and every Korean should hear and understand this story.

This audible book requires patience and some ability to look beyond the flaws of its delivery. The writing and narration are not polished or "professional" in any sense. But this is such a compelling true story of the horrific Cambodian war that must be told. If you can get past the first part of the book and stay with the story line-- you will be educated and rewarded for your patience as you learn of an amazing survivor, a true hero and his incredible life.

The mutiny on HMS Bounty, in the South Pacific on 28 April 1789, is one of history's truly great stories - a tale of human drama, intrigue and adventure of the highest order - and in the hands of Peter FitzSimons it comes to life as never before. Commissioned by the Royal Navy to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti and take them to the West Indies, the Bounty's crew found themselves in a tropical paradise. Five months later, they did not want to leave.
