About this listen

"Superb... A masterpiece of thorough research, deft pacing and arresting detail... This war story - the fight to break out of a frozen hell near the Chosin Reservoir - has been told many times before. But Sides tells it exceedingly well, with fresh research, gritty scenes and cinematic sweep." (Washington Post)

From the New York Times best-selling author of Ghost Soldiers and In the Kingdom of Ice, a chronicle of the extraordinary feats of heroism by Marines called on to do the impossible during the greatest battle of the Korean War.

On Oct. 15, 1950, General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander of UN troops in Korea, convinced President Harry Truman that the Communist forces of Kim Il-sung would be utterly defeated by Thanksgiving. The Chinese, he said with near certainty, would not intervene in the war.

As he was speaking, 300,000 Red Chinese soldiers began secretly crossing the Manchurian border. Led by some 20,000 men of the First Marine Division, the Americans moved deep into the snowy mountains of North Korea, toward the trap Mao had set for the vainglorious MacArthur along the frozen shores of the Chosin Reservoir. What followed was one of the most heroic - and harrowing - operations in American military history, and one of the classic battles of all time. Faced with probable annihilation, and temperatures plunging to 20 degrees below zero, the surrounded, and hugely outnumbered, marines fought through the enemy forces with ferocity, ingenuity, and nearly unimaginable courage as they marched their way to the sea.

Hampton Sides' superb account of this epic clash relies on years of archival research, unpublished letters, declassified documents, and interviews with scores of marines and Koreans who survived the siege. While expertly detailing the follies of the American leaders, On Desperate Ground is an immediate, grunt's-eye view of history, enthralling in its narrative pace and powerful in its portrayal of what ordinary men are capable of in the most extreme circumstances.

Hampton Sides has been hailed by critics as one of the best nonfiction writers of his generation. As the Miami Herald wrote, "Sides has a novelist's eye for the propulsive elements that lend momentum and dramatic pace to the best nonfiction narratives."

Critic reviews

"Superb...a masterpiece of thorough research, deft pacing and arresting detail...Sides shows how brave Marines - officers and grunts - innovated, organized, and blasted their way out of the trap their fabulously famous boss had helped set. This war story - the fight to break out of a frozen hell near the Chosin Reservoir - has been told many times before. But Sides tells it exceedingly well, with fresh research, gritty scenes, and cinematic sweep." (Washington Post)

“To this pantheon [of the best books on the Korean War] we can now add Hampton Sides’ On Desperate Ground, which hits all the right notes.... It’s a story Marines are rightly proud of and one that should be of interest to anyone who wants to know more about the remains that just returned home from Korea, and why those men deserve to be remembered.” (Wall St. Journal)

"No one writes war and extreme life-and-death tales as vividly and authentically as Hampton Sides. As a veteran of the 1st Marine Division, I found his new book about one of the most desperate battles in American history to be riveting and beautifully told. Sides gets it all right, from the heroism of the Marines trapped in the frozen mountains to the chess moves of the generals and politicians who put them there. An incredible page-turner of a book, a must-read." (William Broyles Jr., acclaimed screenwriter of Jarhead, Apollo 13, Flags of Our Fathers, and Cast Away)

“What a book! Through moment-by-moment, intensely-researched details, On Desperate Ground utterly immerses the reader in this harrowing battle. Hampton Sides gives us a better understanding of the history behind current US relations with Korea and China while offering a series of captivating profiles in human courage - an absolutely riveting read.” (Anthony Doerr, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of All the Light We Cannot See)

Not only understanding the Korean War but Asia see info below

For the first time in my life I feel like I got a true accurate picture of the Korean War, and what happened and what it was like. And sad to say, it has taken off the rosy sunglasses on a popular General and showed who the true smart General really is.
And if you want the rest of the story, as to what led to this war, read the book Imperial Cruse, by James Bradley and if you want the next step in this whole Asia picture, read his next book, Fly Boys, and then his most famous book Flag of our Fathers and then you will be fully ready for this one, of which is so well written and so well read, that it often makes you see and feel what happening and gaining how and what each side is thinking, feeling from the leaders down.
War is not glorious and there is nothing good about it but as you will see some leaders were all about their glory but thank goodness, for General Smith, the hero of the book, who was a true leader and God bless him for his wisdom, for even more of our men would have perished. And such a shame for what he had to put up with in those who were over him. Enjoy the book and the other ones as well, that is if you want a full picture of America in Asia and what a shock it will be. It’s what James calls the untold story and I am here to say it is. Why you will see why Japan attacked America.

The bravest men

Hampton Sides does an incredible job telling what these brave Marines endured. I knew nothing about the Korean War. Thank you for the education. I have so much respect for the US military.
On the other hand, Douglas MacArthur and Ned Almond were two despicable men who should have been relieved of their duties due to ineptness and downright stupidity. It’s infuriating to think what these brave Marines went through because of their poor decisions. So many heartbreaking and disturbing stories. PLEASE LiSTEN!

American Sacrifices & Heroes Defending South Korea

Riveting true story of the tragic mis-steps, erroneous assumptions and triumphs of US generals as America was thrust into the bloody conflict on the Korean peninsula following the invasion of South Korea by Soviet-backed North Korea. When Mao send hundreds of thousands of Chinese soldiers against the Americans and UN forces, the world was literally on the brink of World War Three. The history focuses on the uncommon heroism of the US soldiers who fought against almost impossible odds in freezing conditions and overwhelming enemy numbers. Excellent narration and highly compelling history. Every American and every Korean should hear and understand this story.
