Story
You are a mind reader, born with an extraordinary ability to understand what others think, feel, believe, want, and know. It's a sixth sense you use every day, in every personal and professional relationship you have. At its best, this ability allows you to achieve the most important goal in almost any life: connecting, deeply and intimately and honestly, to other human beings. At its worst, it is a source of misunderstanding and unnecessary conflict, leading to damaged relationships and broken dreams. How good are you at knowing the minds of others?

Concision of how we err and mislead ourselves

The author smoothly delivers context and data in a relatable way, maintaining an enticing tone and inspiring an eagerness to continue listening.
Drawing in real world examples from real world studies, the book calls one to think twice about their assumptions and felt sureness around what others are thinking and feeling.

Story
As David Brooks observes, “There is one skill that lies at the heart of any healthy person, family, school, community organization, or society: the ability to see someone else deeply and make them feel seen—to accurately know another person, to let them feel valued, heard, and understood.” And yet we humans don’t do this well. All around us are people who feel invisible, unseen, misunderstood. In How to Know a Person, Brooks sets out to help us do better, posing questions that are essential for all of us: If you want to know a person, what kind of attention should you cast on them?

Practical and heartfelt synthesis of personal experience and medical/science understanding

There’s a real sense of compassion and desire to understand a person in this book, where others on the topic carry a weight of manipulation and others as a means to an end. I couldn’t help but go through it in just a few days and will likely start my 2nd round to solidify and take hard notes of the lessons and gems I missed the first time.

Smooth Ride

Having an interest in neuroscience may leave some readers with a feeling of redundancy on certain topics, though the casual reader may leave somewhat mired in technical terminology and neuroanatomical references without being able to view the pdf at the time of listening to certain stories/studies/etc.
It’s well balanced in its delivery and story. The book and narrator do well to make this an enjoyable listen.
