This started off ok and steadily improved as the story developed. so, imagine my surprise when the resolution ruined the entire thing. Very disappointing.

After growing up reading mostly fiction, I find myself bored with must books to the point where I thought I'd never read a new fiction book again. After years of non fiction reading my wife suggested this series. I'm glad I did. Her books just keep getting better and better. Looking forward to the next

Patricia Briggs does it again! Masterful story telling that not only draws you into the Mercedes Thompson universe, but demands an emotional investment in the each characters life.

I loved this novel and can't wait to listen to the others in the series. The characters were relatable and best of all, they were complex with several layers that kept them interesting. I was invested in the outcome of this story and experienced a roller-coaster of emotions throughout. *spoiler alert* Nonno's death, though anticipated, is a real tear jerker and his final words are life affirming. Mariposa's innocence chafts at first, especially considering that she has been hardened by the streets, but be patient context makes her character lovable. The wolf and the butterfly *sighs* I'll enjoy owning this.

Why is everyone raving about this? I made it 33 minutes before the characters were irredeemable.

Full disclosure, I didnt finish this book. I actually didn't make it half way. The description " for mature listeners", is actually misleading. This is more appropriate for young adults. I was actually surprised by the lack of maturity of the main characters. How immature? Party crashing, Dave and Busters and soft serve icecream . I wasn't a huge fan of either narrator - there is a huge difference between reading and performing. Both narrators can read, that is the extent of my praise.

I'm so disappointed! I purchased credits to get this book. The description, cover art and 5 star comments all made me want to take a chance on this author. This book is a classic example of "writing yourself into a corner". It had such a promising start. I wish the author had taken a step back and redeveloped the plot rather than forcing the story line towards an obvious resolution. *spoiler alert* the rival cartel intercepts group of kidnappers and deliberately delivers the wrong person to their enemy to be tortured, only to return again and kill the guy their enemy tortured. How incompetent is the cartel that they don't know who they have in their employ, who their enemies are or what the guy looks like that owes them money? How do you accidentally torture the son instead of the father?! This is where the story falls to pieces. Neither the scene nor the plot works. Don't get me started on the female narrator's spanish. I couldn't finish this book.

This review may be a little premature, as I have only just finished book one of the series. But I can't imagine that anything could ruin this for me. Christian Fox is brilliant! This story, though based on an unoriginal concept, is incredibly well written and the character development and conflict elevates the premise of an "indecent proposal". I was so drawn into the story, I often found myself standing still, unable to multi-task, because I was so invested in the development of the story. This was worth the credit!

The thing I love about paranormal fiction is the alternate and sometimes separate universe it creates. That's not to say I'm not a fan of stories that are developed on the fringes of society. The ability to integrate the two worlds requires a rare insight into the way society works, but it can be done as we have seen with the Mercedes Thompson and Sookie Stackhouse series. This novel however is merely a contemporary romance disguised as paranormal fiction. The "vampires" of this series enjoy drinking tea and eating lemon cookies more than they do blood! The male protagonist and king of the vampires is willfully ignorant, which is the last thing you would expect when someone has lived for hundreds of years. Don't get me started on the blur. Disappointing story, poor character development. The only thing that could make this vampire less of a vampire is if he sparkled in the sun.
