Story
Court Gentry is known as The Gray Man—a legend in the covert realm, moving silently from job to job, accomplishing the impossible, and then fading away. And he always hits his target. But there are forces more lethal than Gentry in the world. And in their eyes, Gentry has just outlived his usefulness. Now, he is going to prove that for him, there's no gray area between killing for a living-and killing to stay alive.

Contrived, full of cliches

Unimaginative hero worship of the American lone worrier type. Not a single original thought and founded entirely in the fantasy of a gun loving, violence adoring misfit. Waste of time for anyone with half a brain.

Story
Catch-22 is set in the closing months of World War II, in an American bomber squadron on a small island off Italy. Its hero is a bombardier named Yossarian, who is frantic and furious because thousands of people he hasn't even met keep trying to kill him. (He has decided to live forever, even if he has to die in the attempt.)

After a lot of hype I expected better. Then again taste does play a major role here. For me the repetitive dialogs and pseudo intellectual story line does very little.

Story
From master storyteller Bryce Courtenay comes a colorful, lusty story set in the 13th century, an epic tale of a Europe torn by religious intolerance. The story centers around Sylvia Honeyeater, who sings like an angel and can literally charm the birds from the trees. The narrative also features the Pied Piper of Hamelin, Francis of Assisi, the Muslim Sultan and his harem, and the fervor that becomes the Children's Crusade and then, later, the Crusades.

Very good, yet not Courtenay's best
Reviewed: 07-30-12
Having read almost all of Bryce Courtenay's book, I have always been moved by how easily he blends attention to historical detail with a seemingly natural ability to tell a fascinating story. In this Sylvia is no different from any of his other novels and Edwina Wren does a great job, even though Humphry Bower is impossible to top. The story is well told, the charachters are brought to life in typical Courtnay fashion, yet somehow in its entirety the story lacks the luster of his Australia novels. Still, Sylvia is a great book, educational as well as entertaining.

The combination of an incredible narrator and a gifted writer is what makes this audio book truly remarkable. Courtenay takes you on journey spanning 3 generations - the most difficult and yet exciting of the last century, and he does it with a no nonsense style I can appreciate so much.
