About this listen

From the author of The Power of One comes an inspiring human drama and war story of three lives brought together and changed forever by the extraordinary events of recent history. Inspired by real events, Bryce Courtenay's new novel tells the story of three people from vastly differing backgrounds. All they have in common is a tough beginning in life. Jack McKenzie is a harmonica player, soldier, dreamer, and small-time professional fisherman from a tiny island in Bass Strait. Nicole Lenoir-Jourdan is a strong-willed woman hiding from an ambiguous past in Shanghai. Larger than life, Private Jimmy Oldcorn was once a street kid and leader of a New York gang. Together, they reap a vast and not always legitimate fortune from the sea. Narrated by celebrated, award-winning actor Humphrey Bower.©2013 Christine Courtenay (P)2014 Bolinda Publishing Pty. Very good

Another awesome bok by Bryce Courtney. Not quite as good as "the power of one"- but still- and amazing story. So wonderfully written. This book is a must.

Super listen

Three separate characters, drawn together. Very well written and suspenseful ... but not in the car chase, shoot-em thriller style. If you like to learn something - in this case about the Korean War, Shanghai in the 20's and post-WWII Australia - along the war, try this. Oh, yes ... excellent narration.

Fabulous

I loved this book and throughly enjoyed listening to it. What a wonderful reader Bower is and the story is fascinating and full of information about the Korean War. This is the first book from this author that I have read and am looking forward to more. I was so sad that it had to end. I would highly recommend this book. There are so many lessons in it.

AMAZING STORY

I pouted for days when I completed listening to this audio book...I really didn't want it to end! The author is so talented, obviously, but the narrator really ices the cake. I was delighted to find that the narrator has done several other of the author's books, I am downloading my next listen right now!

I have loved all of his books

Bryce Courtenay is one of the best writers I know of. His books are intriguing and I never want to put them down when I’m listening to them. Sadly, he won’t be writing more but he has written a nice sized collection. I also enjoy listening to Humphrey Bower.

Fantastic adventure

This is my favorite of all the Bryce Courtney books that I have listened to and one of my favorite audio books of all time! Yes, it is long, but I actually wished it were longer - I did not want it to end! The characters are great, the rich details of the Korean war enlightening and Humphrey Bower (the narrator) perfect - doing the voice of high-pitched Korean officers and huge deep-voiced black men with equal ease.

Slow starter but great when you get into it

Took awhile to get into this book- lot of info about the Korean war. Quite interesting but alot of war info on individual battles. Once the plot moved past that point, the story got more and more interesting.

As usual, the narrator, Humphrey Bower, was fantastic. His voice just transports you into the story and keeps you there engrossed.

I was glad I purchased this book. Worth listening to.
