Story
Gabriel Delling might call himself a professional con artist, but when walking superstitions start trying to bite his face off, his charm is shockingly unhelpful. It turns out living nightmares almost never appreciate a good joke. Together with a succubus who insists on constantly saving his life, Gabe desperately tries to survive a new reality that suddenly features demons, legends, and a giant locust named Dale - all of whom pretty much hate his guts. And when an ancient horror comes hunting for a spirit locked in his head, Gabe finds himself faced with the excruciating choice between death...or becoming some kind of freaking hero.

Fun story so far…was concerned it would be typical geek gets in over head & makes every stupid mistake possible, but it wasn’t…don’t get me wrong, guy meets insane situation is the general framework, but he is a smart guy, not too geeky and actually makes good choices. Story was entertaining enough that I’m starting book 2 immediately—did not end on a cliff-hanger (thank you) but there is much more of the story to hear—feels like it is just getting started! Narration is very good—enough variation in tone/rate to keep the story flowing without being forced—honestly I almost skipped this book since it is ‘read by the author’ which usually sucks but JE does a great job!

Not your typical SK novel in terms of spookiness, but an incredibly tightly interwoven story that is next to impossible to put down. I can’t say enough about the narrator—she captures not o oh the characters but also the tone of the story itself. Glad I listened instead of reading this one!

Loved it—this story is dark & disturbing but not in the ways you might expect from a typical haunted story. Xe Sands is always spot-on you get a true feeling of the characters the author is trying to convey through her narration.

Nice fast pace; 1st ½ is a bit jumbled—not really sure where it’s going but it really comes together in the 2bd ½ in very unexpected ways. Fun read!

This would be a great summer beach read. There’s a bit of a lull about ⅓ way in, but the story picks back up. At several point you’ll think you’ve figured it out, but the story takes another turn. Very engaging listen that is hard to put down!

But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.
