Story
Flavia de Luce has taken on the mentorship of her odious moon-faced cousin Undine, who has come to live at Buckshaw following the death of her mother. Undine’s main talent, aside from cultivating disgusting habits, seems to be raising Flavia’s hackles, although in her best moments she shows potential for trespassing, trickery, and other assorted mayhem. When Major Greyleigh, a local recluse and former hangman, is found dead after a breakfast of poisonous mushrooms, suspicion falls on the de Luce family’s longtime cook, Mrs. Mullet.

Another Great Mystery
Reviewed: 11-02-24
I keep an eye out new Flavia books, though I usually don’t read mysteries. Alan Bradley seems to channel Flavia rather than creating her. Her emotions and life obstacles are completely relatable and I have such a mental picture of her home that it seems more like a memory than imagined. This book has a solid story and adds to the overarching saga of her life and family and kept me engaged with the mysteries throughout. The narrative was spot on, as always.

Fun easy listen!

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I had just finished the Red Mars trilogy an needed something that wasn’t 90 hours of complexity. This was a jaunty little space mystery with a tight storyline and solid ending. The narrator did well with the younger characters. It’s geared towards kids (12-year-old main character), but it was also fun for my 50-yo ears. It would be a great family road trip book. I will listen to more by Frazier.

Spectacular narration and wonderful story
Reviewed: 08-21-22
This was my favorite of Stephen King’s earlier works. I love his style of writing, but horror isn’t my favorite genre, just as it wasn’t Mr. King’s daughter’s, which is why he wrote this story. It is as enjoyable now as when I read it as a teen, and Mr. Pinchot’s narration brings it a whole new life.

This book is full of enough unique description to bring it to life, but not too much jargon. It is an easy listen, with events and characters trackable, though the narrator tended to slip a Cajun accent in to various characters at random rather than keeping it to a few people and occasional teasing but bothers it seemed designated for. There is also some dated language, but the story and sci-fi elements are still pretty solid.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

It’s been a long time since I enjoyed a book this much. The characters, plot, action, and settings were all perfect, and the science was fun as expected from Andy Weir. The narrator was excellent. This is one I’ll recommend to friends and listen to again. I expected a movie to come out of The Martian when I first read it and Hail Mary would make an amazing movie also.

Story
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

This performance of The Hobbit couldn’t be better. I enjoyed listening to this version more than any other reading or performance of the story, which is timeless and wonderful on its own. Andy Serkis did an amazing job bringing Tolkien’s story to life with voices so distinctive that it was easy to forget that this wasn’t a full cast recording. His performance made it easy to get lost in the story and to feel the magic of it all over again.

Story
It’s been 120 years since the 50 or so worldships containing the few million survivors of the human species set off after the planet Earth was destroyed by a meteor. On the Worldship Humility, Sam, a 30-year-old Airlock Operative, is bored. Living in space should be exciting and full of adventure, except it isn’t, and he fills his time hacking 3-D movie posters and holographic adverts outside the stores in the retail zone. Petty thief Yasmine Emile Dufont is also from the WS Humility, but she is not bored....

I like this genre, so took a chance and found an entertaining story with unexpectedly three-dimensional characters brought to life by the perfect narrator. It’s easy to imagine the class struggles and commercialism that might follow our species into space. There were just enough twists and turns to keep me interested. I will definitely buy the next one.

Set adrift by his pirate crew, Pocket of Dog Snogging - last seen in The Serpent of Venice - washes up on the sun-bleached shores of Greece, where he hopes to dazzle the Duke with his comedic brilliance and become his trusted fool. But the island is in turmoil. Egeus, the Duke’s minister, is furious that his daughter Hermia is determined to marry Demetrius, instead of Lysander, the man he has chosen for her. The Duke decrees that if, by the time of the wedding, Hermia still refuses to marry Lysander, she shall be executed...or consigned to a nunnery.

Story
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

Took a while to get me hooked, but a great story!
Reviewed: 05-18-15
I only gave this story half my attention at first. It was full of technical details and action, but I didn't have much interest in the main character. By the end of the book I was hanging on every word. You always think things will work out in the end...but, not always. I would have liked a bit more exposition of the character...why was he interested in botany and engineering, how did he wind up in the space program, who were his friends outside of work, if he had any? Still, you get to know him pretty well, which is aided by the perfect narration. Sure, some of the secondary characters' accents were a little off, but I can't imagine a better person to perform this particular book. I would definitely recommend the audio version because of his ability to capture the humor and stress in a way that makes you forget it's just a story. A very good story, as it turns out. Glad I stuck with it!
