Confusing, depressing and a bunch of Mormonism. A few good surprises.
Reviewed: 02-26-25
As an ex Mormon and a fan of this author I was very disappointed with how much Mormon doctrine he used. Some of it was the deep stuff you don’t even know about unless you’ve studied it for a long time. I know it has been interwoven into the entire series but it is way too much here. It made me enjoy the book far less because it seems underhanded and I began to wonder if he’s trying to “plant seeds of truth” into readers’ minds. Ick. Leave that fiction to the Church dude.
On the other hand, huge kudos for celebrating a gay couple! Well done! Look out for the letter you will likely be getting from the Twelve. John Dehlin can be a lot of help if that happens….
I enjoyed getting to know Wit and watching other characters grow. But the good was overwhelmed by the depressing stuff and I had to take long breaks. Be aware of that and you should be ok.
Too much flipping back and forth between scenes. I don’t usually mind it but I got whiplash from it in this book!
In the end it’s worth the read to move forward in the series.

Story
Jake is working at the neighborhood market under his apartment when the world ends. He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization. But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that? When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

still love the characters but it feels like the author is just describing half the stuff that should be scripted out for the characters. Don't give up on them! Not really fond of his choice in bad guys but I guess someone has to be. I just really really hope that the super predictable thing doesn't happen in the end cuz i will be really disappointed. Don't get Jason and Amy back together. The story does not support it and both characters deserve better. pleeeeease don't do it. Jason belongs with Dawn or Farah or someone new and awesome.

Story
Life is boring when you live in the real world instead of starring in your own book series. Owen knows that better than anyone, what with the real world's homework and chores. But everything changes the day Owen sees the impossible happen - his classmate Bethany climbs out of a book in the library. It turns out Bethany's half fictional and has been searching every book she can find for her missing father, a fictional character.

A LOT OF YELLING in the performance made it really annoying to me... ruined it despite pretty good acting otherwise.
The story idea is original but a little too outrageous for me. Not sure if I will finish the book or listen to the rest of them.

The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From the Next Generation to J. J.
