Story
It's a story you think you know: the age-old tale of "star-cross'd lovers"; two families at war; a romance, so pure and absolute, fated for a tragic end. It's a story so thoroughly embedded in our culture, and so frequently retold. Yet, nothing captures the spark, the possibility, and the surprise of Shakespeare's work quite like this....

Retelling Of Romeo And Juliet
Reviewed: 06-06-24
I appreciated the thoughtfulness and intelligence of this version of Romeo and Juliet - the writer put a good deal of effort into outlining the setting, the city, and what was happening in history in Italy in 1499. In addition, the author took time to give Friar Laurence a backstory, so that we see why he might have helped Romeo and Juliet, and that he wasn’t just a foolish and frightened old man, the way he is often portrayed. Count Paris also was given an interesting twist - this version seems to me to be more realistic than Shakespeare’s version; more a cold man of business and material things than a man of gentle ways and courtesy.
And yes, the best part for me was that Juliet was 3-dimensional, was intelligent, had her own thoughts and opinions, and thus her own agency. She *chose*; and she wanted to live as a free person, even as difficult as that might have been for a woman back then.
For those who would like another spin on the Romeo and Juliet story, I would recommend reading “Still Star-Crossed,” by Melinda Taub (also available on Audible).
Richard Armitage continues to prove what an excellent narrator and actor he is - the perfect voice for this story! 5/5 stars

It was amazing (and heartbreaking) to hear Matthew Perry narrate his own memoir- I am thankful he found some measure of peace in his later life. But it’s haunting to think about what might have been, and how much this extraordinary man still had to give. A very important listen, and would recommend this book to everyone.

Story
The story that made Agatha Christie famous ends with one of her most dramatic twists. The villagers of King’s Abbot are shocked when a wealthy local widow commits suicide and the very next day her fiancé, Roger Ackroyd, is stabbed to death. Dr. James Sheppard, the local physician, discovers the body of his friend and narrates the ensuing hunt for the killer. All the guests and staff at Ackroyd's country house seem to have solid alibis - except for his missing stepson.

Richard Armitage has the perfect voice to narrate the mysteries of Agatha Christie- he can sound equally menacing, curious, fearful, pompous, or sanguine, no matter which character he is voicing. He also performs Hercule Poirot extremely well, and those of us who admire David Suchet’s onscreen Poirot should find Armitage’s version a welcome addition. 5/5 stars

Story
Michael Nesmith's eclectic, electric life spans his star-making role on The Monkees, his invention of the music video, and his critical contributions to movies, comedy, and the world of virtual reality. Above all, his is a seeker's story, a pilgrimage in search of a set of principles to live by. That search took Nesmith from a childhood in Dallas, where his single mother, Bette, invented Liquid Paper, to the set of The Monkees in Los Angeles, to the heart of swinging London with John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix, and to an unexpected oasis of brilliance in the Santa Fe desert.

It was a joy to find Mike Nesmith actually wrote his own story, in his own words (no ghostwriters!), and to tell it in his own voice. Wonderful! I enjoyed spending time with Nes and hearing his many thoughts on fame, spirituality, and finally finding a sense of peace in his life. Rest In Peace, Mr Nesmith. You are missed.
