Story
According to Confucius, “an educated woman is a worthless woman,” but Tan Yunxian—born into an elite family, yet haunted by death, separations, and loneliness—is being raised by her grandparents to be of use. Her grandmother is one of only a handful of female doctors in China, and she teaches Yunxian the pillars of Chinese medicine, the Four Examinations—looking, listening, touching, and asking—something a man can never do with a female patient.

Depressing Story
Reviewed: 12-07-23
I just found this to be a hard listen because it is a depressing story about a very difficult era & culture. With all that’s going on in the world these days I don’t recommend it right now if you’re looking for a feel good story to transport away from the on-going current bad news. That said Lisa See is an excellent writer & if you listen to books on Audible as I do, the reader for this one was excellent too.

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Story
Early one morning on the shore of the Thames, DCI Samuel Owusu is called to the scene of a gruesome discovery. When Owusu sends the evidence for examination, he learns the bones are connected to a cold case that left three people dead on the kitchen floor in a Chelsea mansion thirty years ago. Rachel Rimmer has also received a shock—her husband, Michael, has been found dead in the cellar of his house in France. All signs point to an intruder, and the French police need her to come urgently to answer questions about Michael and his past that she very much doesn’t want to answer.

I am now a Lisa Jewell devotee. I am going to read more of her books.
BTW, excellent traders on Audible versions of both books. That makes so much difference!

Story
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

The best book I’ve read in a very very long time.
Reviewed: 05-29-22
The Midnight Library has all of the elements of a book that I never want to end: a fascinating story line that gives me so much to reflect on regarding my own life, philosophical mind bending…and interesting characters.
The idea that quantum physics exists and the possibilities that brings to our lives is exciting to contemplate. I learned a lot in this book. To me it is a masterpiece.
I listened to it on Audible (twice) and loved Carey Mulligan’s reading. She added even more pleasure and depth with her spoken dialogue to the story for me than just reading pages. She captured the essence of Nora.
I recommended it to my book club and look forward to a spirited discussion.

Yasmin Ghorami is 26, in training to be a doctor (like her Indian-born father), and engaged to the charismatic, upper-class Joe Sangster, whose formidable mother, Harriet, is a famous feminist. The gulf between families is vast. So, too, is the gulf in sexual experience between Yasmin and Joe. As the wedding day draws near, misunderstandings, infidelities, and long-held secrets upend both Yasmin’s relationship and that of her parents, a “love marriage”, according to the family lore that Yasmin has believed all her life.

I have waited for another book from Monica Ali ever since I read Brick Lane. She is a wonderful story teller and weaves many interesting sub plots into Love Marriage. The story is rich with insights into human nature and shows us that things are never as you see them.
I like to listen to books on Audible because I find that the voices add so much to the characters. The reader for this book was outstanding!

I loved this book.i visited Cuba 2 years ago and loved the country& the people. They have suffered so. Ugh much as a result of all the political wars. We learned so much about their culture & struggles while we were there. This story is more than a love story, it tells of the long fight of the Cuban people for their country. I highly recommend it and I have hope that these people will be able to recapture their birthright.

Very compelling story with one very annoying flaw.
Reviewed: 12-12-20
I found this one hard to put down because the writer held my attention with the details leading up to the conclusion, even though we knew the destiny of the flight early on. I liked the information about all of the characters which made the tragedy more compelling. As I was reading it I began to realize that the accident was very similar to the crash of Air France 447 in 2011. That was confirmed in the epilogue. The author had obviously done her research. The info about the pilot error involved points out concerns with the technical automation in the newer aircraft and how Some pilots often are ill equipped or trained to handle an emergency situation when the auto pilot is suddenly disengaged. What did annoy me is that it often seems that in airline stories the writers just have to embellish the story with a description of the flight attendant slipping into the lavatory to hook up with a passenger, join the so called “Mile High Club”. This cheapens an otherwise very compelling story about a doomed flight and it’s victims. As a flight attendant of many years in the job I resent this, it is first of all ridiculous because flight attendants are not available or interested in flight to have sex in the filthy tiny lavatories with random passengers, plus it demeans them as nothing more than airborne sex crazed hookers. They are there as mandated by the FAA and safety trained to save lives in the event of any emergency. Serving cocktails and snacks is the least of what they do. Being a Flight attendant is a serious profession. This story was excellent on its own without adding the salacious side story.

The story line was great but I felt it went on a bit too long. The twist at the end was great.

I learned about the amazing author Laila Lalami when I read a review of her earlier book “The Other Americans” in the LA Times. I was drawn to that book because I had spent some time in Morocco and the plot intrigued me. Plus I loved the beauty of the country and its rich culture. She writes and shows us about the challenges that people who are immigrants or victims of the class system and prejudices.
I looked forward to this book by her because of how impressed I was with her writing. Her next story “Secret Son” is just as compelling. Ms. Lalami is a magnificent teller of important stories.
