About this listen
In 1960s Florida, a young Cuban exile will risk her life - and heart - to take back her country in this exhilarating historical novel from the author of Next Year in Havana.
Beautiful. Daring. Deadly.
The Cuban Revolution took everything from sugar heiress Beatriz Perez - her family, her people, her country. Recruited by the CIA to infiltrate Fidel Castro's inner circle and pulled into the dangerous world of espionage, Beatriz is consumed by her quest for revenge and her desire to reclaim the life she lost.
As the Cold War swells like a hurricane over the shores of the Florida Strait, Beatriz is caught between the clash of Cuban-American politics and the perils of a forbidden affair with a powerful man driven by ambitions of his own. When the ever-changing tides of history threaten everything she has fought for, she must make a choice between her past and future - but the wrong move could cost Beatriz everything - not just the island she loves, but also the man who has stolen her heart.

This is a captivating historical mystery, infused with romance, that links the lives of three women across a century - two deep in the past, one in the present - to the doomed passenger liner, RMS Lusitania.... Her finances are in dire straits, and best-selling author Sarah Blake is struggling to find a big idea for her next book. Desperate, she breaks the one promise she made to her mother and opens an old chest that belonged to her great-grandfather, who died when the RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat in 1915. What she discovers there could change history.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Story
In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation.

Story
Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

Some slow moments, but enjoyed it
having read the first novel, Next Year in Cuba I felt compelled to read this one. Some parts were slow and preachy, as she reflected on the role of women, but overall a love story/memoir with a bit of intrigue

Cuban sisters in america and the tale they tell
So very much enjoyed this title taking place in the south of Florida pre Bay of Pigs. The flight of the family escaping Cuba and the history of the regimes that have taken Cuba captive are enthralling. The CIA operative aspect is in accordance with one of the sisters true calling to aid her country. The culture, the relationships and the history make these books extremely enjoyable!

Good Easy Read
This is a good story of love, espionage and young people coming of age. The author did a good job showing the complexity and interrelatedness of politics, war and business. Everything is in the gray zone.

Pleasantly Surprised
After reading some of the reviews, I almost skipped this one. But I liked it better than “Next Year in Havana.” It touched the emotions more for me. The author really shows the dilemma one can face when love for County, love for family, and love for a person are in conflict. I also appreciated how the author shows the conflicting feelings of people escaping their homeland when all they hold dear is threatened and yet struggle with making their new home “theirs.” The main character was a strong, beautiful, resilient, yet sometime naive young women. For me, well worth the read.
