Story
In Argus, North Dakota, a collection of people revolve around a fraught wedding. Gary Geist, a terrified young man set to inherit two farms, is desperate to marry Kismet Poe, an impulsive, lapsed Goth who can't read her future but seems to resolve his. Hugo, a gentle red-haired, home-schooled giant, is also in love with Kismet. He’s determined to steal her and is eager to be a home wrecker. Kismet's mother, Crystal, hauls sugar beets for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes into the darkness of late-night radio, sees visions of guardian angels.

Great story, rural setting, excellent character development.

Character development was wonderful The description of a major accident made me feel a part of it. The story of normal people doing good and bad things was so real. I also enjoyed the author’s gentle way of presenting the climate crisis.

Well told story always moving forward. Interesting take on love and friendship. Depression era history is brutal, but Hawker made it readable and not crushing. Enjoyed it.

This was my first introduction to Cli Fi! Its prose was beautifully written and the story was somewhat disturbing. Many parts of it are believable and a peek into the losses garnered by climate change. Character interiority was so well developed and enjoyable. Recommend if you want something different!

Fantastic “modern” western!

Loved the poetic prose, the narrator was wonderful, and it had a real plot with twists and turns! It had rough language and violence, but that’s what a western requires. Highly recommend for an entertaining and refreshing read!!

Though she will be “gifted” various names, her birth name is known to her alone. May be the best recounting of American slavery because it told about atrocities of slavery in a manner that didn’t gloss over it but was also told in a subtle enough manner that the gory details didn’t overwhelm or consume the listener in grief. The narrator was exquisite! Really great read!
