About this listen

For fans of Station Eleven and Where the Crawdads Sing comes a hopeful, sweeping story of survival and resilience spanning one extraordinary woman’s lifetime as she navigates the uncertainty, brutality, and arresting beauty of a rapidly changing world.

Florida is slipping away. As devastating weather patterns and rising sea levels wreak gradual havoc on the state’s infrastructure, a powerful hurricane approaches a small town on the southeastern coast. Kirby Lowe, an electrical line worker, his pregnant wife, Frida, and their two sons, Flip and Lucas, prepare for the worst. When the boys go missing just before the hurricane hits, Kirby heads out into the high winds in search of his children. Left alone, Frida goes into premature labor and gives birth to an unusual child, Wanda, whom she names after the catastrophic storm that ushers her into a society closer to collapse than ever before.

As Florida continues to unravel, Wanda grows. Moving from childhood to adulthood, adapting not only to the changing landscape, but also to the people who stayed behind in a place abandoned by civilization, Wanda loses family, gains community, and ultimately, seeks adventure, love, and purpose in a place remade by nature.

Told in four parts—power, water, light, and time—The Light Pirate mirrors the rhythms of the elements and the sometimes quick, sometimes slow dissolution of the world as we know it. It is a meditation on the changes we would rather not see, the future we would rather not greet, and a call back to the beauty and violence of an untamable wilderness.

loved this book

this book was so good, the writing and narration drew me in and made me feel everything the characters where feeling. the one thing that was disappointing was that the end was wrapped up too quickly. u invest and travel with Wanda thru all the hard times and when she finally becomes a adult the story skips ahead to the end of her life. I did feel denied all her adult adventures. this book should have been a series

Great book; misleading name

This was a less fun book than the tittle indicated, but that’s great because this made me feel something and I was expecting nothing.

The concept of Florida displaying because of storms. How the weather impacted peoples lives.

Enjoyed how all the lives were woven together. The story has hunted me a bit after finishing it. Well written. It’s a keeper that I will read again.

A great book full of adventure, heartbreak, love, survival, friendship, forgiveness, and growth.

The Light Pirate brought adventure, heartbreak, forgiveness, friendship, love, and growth. Several moments were suspenseful and kept me grasping to read longer-even when my eyelids were heavy. I loved reading a book with a great deal of survival and strength, through characters.

Different and Captivating

The story draws you in slowly and your curiosity as to what happens next keeps you listening. The characters all well drawn out and interesting. This is a different apocalyptic sort of novel but the warning is still there. An excellent read

Easily, A 5 Star Listen

Wonderful story. A cautionary tale full of adventure and challenge. I love a strong female and there are a few here showing real intelligence and grit. Great narration as well.
Highly recommend.
