Read hardcover, listened on cassette when it first came out (2005), and just listened to it (Audible) again in 2022. Tells story well, let's heroes be real (Evans, Copland, Sprague) and doesn't shy away from idiots (Halsey, Kurita) without being overly harsh.

book moves from interesting ideas to defense of sociology and violates some of its own premises with bias and desirability of outcomes.

Sledge wrote from the heart and does not glorify war and honors the warrior. Two voices (one Sledge, one backstory) aids the flow and makes a strong performance.

Superbly researched and presented. Ties all theaters together to provide a fascinating interlocking view of World War II at sea.

Overall, a good detailed story. Too much detail about tonnage of ships sank and last few chapters expose a racism not tolerated in today's world. Was written in early 1950s and reflects time of its origin.
