Story
Paul Schumann, a German American living in New York City in 1936, is a mobster hitman known as much for his brilliant tactics as for taking only "righteous" assignments. But then Paul gets caught. And the arresting officer offers him a stark choice: prison or covert government service. Paul is asked to pose as a journalist covering the summer Olympics taking place in Berlin. He's to hunt down and kill Reinhard Ernst - the ruthless architect of Hitler's clandestine rearmament.

A different kind of Deaver book
Reviewed: 04-02-20
This was surprising very different from all of the other Deaver books I've read over the years - refreshingly so. It was a good book but would've been an excellent book if it had been about 1/3 shorter. I am glad I hung in until the end. The narration was top-notch .

It was fine but

lacking by comparison to many other Deaver books, or even other Lincoln Rhyme books. The bad guys were not all that interesting and Lincoln and Amelia were not particularly interesting either in this one. But still a solid read compared to many other current authors' works.

Fun book- really enjoyed it

I found it to be lighter than his usual books, although I love all of his work. This one is a little different. I would definitely recommend it.

Story
A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged. Left behind is a lonely 15-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother's sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from - a place to which she vowed she'd never return.

difficult to finish - just not compelling

The story simply wasn't very interesting as presented by the author. Had to back up and re-listen many times since my attention consistently wandered. Readers were good though.
